Reliance Industries is planning to invest around INR 1.6 lakh crore, or over USD 17 billion, to develop a 1.5 gigawatt data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project will be executed in phases and supported by captive renewable energy and storage systems. It is expected to be the largest such facility in India. The investment comes amid rising demand for AI, cloud and data services, and is likely to strengthen the state’s position as a key destination for digital infrastructure development.
Reliance Industries is preparing to set up a large data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with a planned investment of about INR 1.6 lakh crore, equivalent to over USD 17 billion. The proposed facility will have a total capacity of 1.5 gigawatts and is expected to be the largest data centre development in the country.
The project will be developed in phases. The first phase is expected to include a 500 megawatt facility, which is likely to become operational by October 2028. Further phases will gradually expand the capacity to the planned 1.5 gigawatts. The timeline indicates that the full development will extend towards the end of the decade.
The cluster will be supported by a dedicated renewable energy setup, including solar power generation along with battery energy storage systems. This is important as data centres require continuous and reliable power supply, especially with increasing demand for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.
The proposal was cleared by the state’s Investment Promotion Committee in the past week, indicating government support for large-scale digital infrastructure projects in the region. The development is also expected to be larger than other planned data centre projects in the area, including a 1 gigawatt facility proposed by global technology players.
The investment builds on Reliance’s earlier plans to expand its presence in digital infrastructure and data services. The company has been focusing on scaling its capabilities in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and data storage through its digital arm. Previous proposals and partnerships had already indicated interest in developing large data centre ecosystems in Andhra Pradesh.
Visakhapatnam has been emerging as a preferred location for such projects due to factors like land availability, connectivity and policy support. Multiple companies have announced plans to develop data centres in the region, driven by rising data consumption, localisation requirements and growth in digital services across India.
The scale of this project reflects the growing need for data infrastructure in the country. With increasing adoption of AI technologies, cloud platforms and digital applications, demand for large and energy-efficient data centres is expected to continue rising.
