Synopsis

Construction has commenced on a temporary cricket stadium in Pomona, Southern California, for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, marking the sport’s return to the Games after over a century. The venue will host men’s and women’s T20 competitions with six teams each. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has positioned this as a key step in expanding cricket’s global reach. The ground is also scheduled to host a few Major League Cricket matches in the coming months, indicating early operational use ahead of the Olympics.

Construction has begun on a dedicated cricket venue for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where the sport is set to return after a gap of 128 years. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the stadium is being developed as a temporary facility at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, located in Southern California.

The venue will host both men’s and women’s competitions in the T20 format, with six teams participating in each category. Cricket was last played at the Olympics in 1900, making its inclusion in the upcoming Games a significant development for the sport’s global presence.

Jay Shah, Chairman of the ICC, stated that the organisation has been focused on expanding cricket’s reach globally and sees its inclusion in the Olympics as an important milestone that carries both pride and long-term ambition.

In addition to Olympic preparations, the venue is expected to host three matches of Major League Cricket between July 1 and July 5 this year. This is likely to serve as an early test of the infrastructure and operations ahead of the Olympic event.

The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles Games is part of a broader push to introduce sports with growing international appeal, particularly in markets like the United States, where cricket is still developing but witnessing gradual growth through franchise-based leagues.
