Etihad Airways has announced plans to expand its operations in China by adding five new routes, increasing connectivity between the United Arab Emirates and key Chinese cities.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline will introduce additional services to Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shenzhen, taking its total destinations in China to six. The expansion will add 28 weekly flights to its schedule.

The new routes will be operated using Etihad's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Services on the Abu Dhabi Shanghai Pudong route are set to begin in October, while flights to the other cities are expected to commence in March 2027.

The move is aimed at strengthening Etihad's partnership with China Eastern Airlines and enhancing its presence in the region. The airline said the expanded network will also support cargo operations by improving connectivity to major manufacturing and export hubs in China.

The development comes at a time when Middle Eastern carriers are navigating disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. Flight operations across the region have been impacted, with a sharp decline in traffic following recent geopolitical tensions.

Despite these challenges, Etihad's network expansion reflects continued focus on long-term growth and strengthening international connectivity, particularly in key global trade markets.
