The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) initiated enforcement action against prominent hotel properties over unpaid urban development (UD) tax, leading to swift compliance from operators. Properties linked to Hotel Marriott near Jawahar Circle and Hotel Ramada in Raja Park were sealed due to outstanding dues of approximately INR 5 crore and INR 1 crore, respectively. The liabilities had remained unpaid since 2007 despite repeated notices. Within hours of the sealing action, both hotel managements cleared their dues, resulting in the reopening of the affected premises. The move forms part of a broader municipal drive to strengthen tax recovery and ensure compliance among commercial establishments across Jaipur.
The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) undertook enforcement action against two major hotel properties in Jaipur in the past week, sealing associated premises over long-pending urban development (UD) tax dues, following which the operators cleared outstanding payments within hours, leading to the reopening of the properties.
The civic body's revenue team from the Malviya Nagar zone initiated action against Hotel Marriott, located near Jawahar Circle, where dues of approximately INR 5 crore had remained unpaid. As part of the operation, authorities sealed a luxury car showroom and a restaurant situated outside the hotel premises, restricting access until the liabilities were settled.
A similar enforcement measure was carried out at Hotel Ramada in Raja Park, where pending dues of around INR 1 crore had accumulated over several years. Officials indicated that both properties had been issued multiple notices in the past regarding unpaid UD tax, but payments had not been made within stipulated timelines.
Following the sealing action, representatives of both hotel groups approached the municipal office and submitted payments to clear their outstanding liabilities. Civic officials stated that the dues were settled within approximately two hours of the enforcement action, after which the sealed premises were reopened in accordance with procedure.
Officials further indicated that the dues in both cases dated back to 2007. In the case of the Marriott-linked properties, the showroom and restaurant had not cleared UD tax despite repeated reminders issued by the civic body. For the Ramada property, the delay was attributed to a prolonged dispute over tax classification, with the hotel management seeking classification under industrial rates while the corporation levied charges under commercial rates.
The action forms part of JMC's ongoing efforts to improve compliance among commercial establishments and strengthen municipal revenue collection. Urban development tax is a key source of funding for civic infrastructure, including road maintenance, sewerage systems, and urban services, making timely recovery critical for city administration.
The prompt payment following enforcement highlights the effectiveness of coercive measures in recovering long-pending dues, particularly in high-value commercial properties. The municipal corporation has been undertaking similar drives across zones, targeting defaulters who have failed to respond to prior notices, with sealing and attachment actions forming a central part of its recovery mechanism.
The development underscores a stricter stance by urban local bodies on tax compliance, especially within the hospitality and commercial real estate segments, where prolonged disputes and delayed payments have historically affected revenue realisation.
