Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India has deployed more than 5,100 women staff during day shifts at over 1,140 toll plazas across India's national highways and expressway network as part of a nationwide initiative to promote gender inclusivity and women's empowerment. The move, supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aims to increase female participation in frontline operational roles while improving service delivery at toll plazas. The decision follows consultations with toll operators and industry bodies, including the National Highways Builder Federation and the Highway Operators Association of India. Authorities said more women staff are expected to join the initiative, which will also include specialised training programmes to support professional and safe toll operations.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has deployed more than 5,100 female staff during daytime shifts to manage toll collection operations at over 1,140 toll plazas across the country's national highways and expressway network.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening women's participation in frontline operational roles while promoting gender inclusivity and social empowerment across India's highway infrastructure ecosystem. The programme is being implemented under the guidance of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

According to an official statement, the decision was taken after consultations with several stakeholders, including toll plaza operators and industry bodies such as the National Highways Builder Federation, the Highway Operators Association of India and the All India User Fee Contractors Federation. All toll operators agreed to deploy women staff for user fee collection during daytime shifts at toll plazas.

Officials said that more women employees are expected to join toll plaza operations in the coming months as the initiative expands across the highway network.

As part of the programme, NHAI will also organise specialised training sessions for the deployed women staff, particularly those from rural areas. The training will cover areas such as courteous interaction with highway users, handling emergency situations, basic safety protocols and ensuring efficient toll plaza management.

Authorities said the structured training initiative is intended to enhance service quality while ensuring a safe, professional and supportive working environment for women employees at toll plazas across the country.
