IBM has launched its first Infrastructure Innovation Centre in Bengaluru, strengthening India's role in developing enterprise-grade artificial intelligence (AI) and infrastructure technologies. The facility, located at the India Systems Development Lab (ISDL) campus, is designed as a collaborative engineering hub where IBM teams will work with clients, software vendors, and system integrators to build secure and scalable AI solutions. By bringing together experts across processors, operating systems, firmware, and virtualization, the centre aims to accelerate the development of hybrid-cloud and AI infrastructure systems. The launch highlights IBM's increasing reliance on India for advanced engineering and product ownership in areas such as mainframes, servers, storage, and cloud technologies, while reinforcing Bengaluru's position as a global technology innovation hub.
IBM has opened its first Infrastructure Innovation Centre in Bengaluru as part of its strategy to expand advanced infrastructure engineering and artificial intelligence innovation from India. The new centre is designed to function as a collaborative engineering hub, bringing together IBM's systems architects, infrastructure engineers, and ecosystem partners. Teams will work jointly with clients, independent software vendors, global system integrators, and global capability centres to design enterprise-grade AI solutions. By combining infrastructure technologies, hybrid cloud capabilities, and AI tools under one roof, IBM aims to accelerate the development of secure, scalable, and responsible enterprise AI systems.
Company executives say the centre will also improve internal collaboration across technology layers. Engineers working on processor design, firmware development, operating systems, and virtualization platforms will now operate from the same facility, enabling faster innovation cycles and stronger cross-team coordination.
India already plays a major role in IBM's infrastructure development efforts. The ISDL network in Bengaluru, along with labs in Pune and Hyderabad, contributes significantly to the design and modernization of IBM's mainframe and server platforms, which support mission-critical applications in sectors such as banking, airlines, retail, and government. Indian engineers are increasingly taking ownership of key components across the technology stack, including operating systems and processor development for next-generation systems.
Industry observers note that the initiative reflects growing enterprise demand for AI-ready infrastructure. According to IBM research, more than half of Indian organisations are increasing infrastructure investments as AI adoption expands across industries.
By launching the innovation centre in Bengaluru, IBM is reinforcing India's importance as a strategic global hub for AI infrastructure development, while enabling enterprises to build and deploy advanced AI applications at scale.
