Synopsis

Indian Railways has launched RailParcel, a pilot initiative to improve rail-based parcel movement across seven cities Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru and Chennai under the South Central Railway zone. The pilot is digitally enabled through ROQIT, a platform developed by AION-Tech Solutions Limited, which provides a workflow and coordination layer for parcel operations during the proof-of-concept phase. RailParcel aims to introduce structured digitisation of booking and operational processes, enhance shipment visibility, and enable interoperability with existing railway systems, including CRIS. The initiative aligns with Indian Railways broader push to modernise logistics, improve multimodal coordination and leverage its largely electrified network to support more efficient and sustainable parcel transportation.

Indian Railways has initiated a pilot programme titled RailParcel to strengthen rail-based parcel logistics through targeted digitisation, with implementation led by the South Central Railway zone. The pilot covers seven urban centres Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru and Chennai and is intended to test technology-enabled workflows for parcel movement across the rail network.

The initiative is supported by ROQIT, a digital platform developed by AION-Tech Solutions Limited, which functions as the underlying technology layer during the proof-of-concept deployment. According to the project framework, ROQIT enables coordination among operational stakeholders, digitises key parcel workflows and integrates with Indian Railways existing systems without altering core infrastructure during the pilot phase.

RailParcel has been designed to address operational gaps in rail parcel handling by introducing structured digital processes across booking, movement and tracking. The platform supports real-time parcel visibility across operational touchpoints, digitisation of booking and operational workflows, and readiness for integration with third-party logistics service providers. It is also interoperable with existing railway technology systems, including those managed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).

Officials associated with the pilot indicated that the focus at this stage is on establishing a reliable and interoperable digital foundation that can function within the constraints of existing railway operations. The initiative is aligned with Indian Railways ongoing efforts to improve logistics efficiency through digitisation, while strengthening rail's role within India's broader freight and parcel movement ecosystem.

The pilot is also positioned within the context of Indian Railways predominantly electrified network, which offers cost efficiencies and lower emissions compared to road-based parcel transport. By improving visibility and coordination, RailParcel is expected to support better utilisation of existing rail logistics capacity, particularly for short- and medium-haul parcel movement between major urban centres.

Based on outcomes from the current pilot, future phases may examine opportunities for network-level optimisation, data-driven operational decision support and deeper integration with multimodal logistics systems. Indian Railways stated that RailParcel reflects its incremental approach to modernising logistics operations through focused technology deployments, while reinforcing rail as a scalable, cost-effective and sustainable mode for parcel transportation.
