Synopsis

Nagpur Metro's Phase 3 expansion is poised to become the largest growth stage in the system's history, adding approximately 54.5-55 km of new lines and bringing the total network to around 129 km, sources said. The expansion plan, incorporated in Nagpur's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and now included in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) process, will feature four key corridors: a c. 25 km route along the Inner Ring Road and three additional links enhancing north-south connectivity and last-mile access to industrial and greenfield zones. Once completed, the extension will position Nagpur Metro among India's most extensive urban rail systems outside larger metropolitan markets. The DPR, expected within nine months, will determine final alignments, station locations and elevated or underground sections before phased construction begins after completion of Phase 2.

Nagpur Metro's Phase 3 expansion is set to be the most ambitious growth phase in the city's urban rail history, with plans to add an estimated 54.5-55 km of new routes, sources said. Once Phase 3 is carried out, the total metro network length will extend to about 129 km, making Nagpur one of the Indian cities with the most expansive metro systems outside the largest urban centres.

The proposed expansion is part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) approved by authorities last year and includes four major corridors designed to improve connectivity across Nagpur's urban and peri-urban areas. At the heart of Phase 3 is a roughly 25 km line running along the city's Inner Ring Road, linking Mankapur Chowk with Rachana junction (Hingna T-point). This corridor is expected to enhance cross-city mobility while serving dense residential and commercial sectors.

In addition to the Inner Ring Road route, three other stretches are planned. One is an 11.5 km north-south route between Sitabuldi and Koradi aimed at strengthening internal connectivity, and another is a short but strategic 3 km link from MIDC ESR to CEAT Ltd to better integrate the industrial belt at Butibori with the broader network. A third segment, about 15 km long, will extend the metro from Khapri to New Nagpur, connecting the nascent greenfield development to the existing metro infrastructure.

Together, these corridors will add nearly 55 km to Nagpur Metro's footprint. Phase 1 and Phase 2 combined currently account for about 84 km of track, and the planned addition under Phase 3 will more than double earlier expansions. The scale of Phase 3 marks it as the largest expansion yet, reflecting authorities intent to significantly upgrade the city's mass transit capacity.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) for Phase 3 are being prepared by consultants under central government guidelines and are expected to be completed within the next nine months. These reports will firm up exact alignments, siting of stations and decisions on whether sections will be elevated or underground. Following DPR submission and approvals, construction will begin in stages once the ongoing Phase 2 is completed.

Analysts said the scale of the planned Phase 3 expansion underscores Nagpur's ambition to transform into a more connected and transit-oriented city, with metro rail playing a central role in shaping future mobility, land use planning and urban growth.
