A gas tanker carrying highly flammable propylene overturned near the Adoshi Tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, leading to a massive traffic jam lasting more than 12 hours. Traffic on the Mumbai bound lane was immediately stopped, while some vehicles were diverted onto the Pune bound carriageway, yet congestion persisted due to ongoing gas leakage. Vehicles in both directions were stranded, with a gridlock stretching over 25 km. Motorists faced prolonged delays, some trapped for hours without basic amenities such as food, water, or toilets. Passengers, including women and children, reported extreme inconvenience as the jam continued late into the night.
Commuters expressed frustration on social media, highlighting the severity of the standstill. One traveler noted that a journey that usually takes a few hours extended into the early morning, while others pointed out the lack of timely support from authorities. Reports indicated that the delay persisted despite emergency services being deployed quickly.
The Highway Safety Patrol, along with National Disaster Response Force personnel, managed the site to contain the gas leak and secure the overturned tanker. Officials estimated that clearing the site would take several hours, keeping traffic halted until early the next morning. Alternative routes were suggested to divert vehicles, but the impact on daily commuters and transport services was significant.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a crucial corridor connecting the two cities, faced an unprecedented disruption due to the hazardous load.
