Synopsis

The Prime Minister unveiled and laid foundation stones for multiple rail and road infrastructure projects in West Bengal with a total investment exceeding INR 3,250 crore. The initiatives focus on improving passenger travel, strengthening freight movement, and enhancing links between the state and the North-East. Key highlights include the launch of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, new Amrit Bharat Express services, railway line expansions, maintenance facility upgrades, and a major national highway widening project in north Bengal aimed at reducing travel time and logistics costs.

The Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several rail and road infrastructure projects in West Bengal involving an investment of more than INR 3,250 crore. The projects are aimed at improving regional connectivity, easing passenger movement, and strengthening freight logistics, particularly in north Bengal and along routes linking the state with the North-Eastern region.

One of the key developments was the flagging off of the country's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train service on the Howrah-Guwahati (Kamakhya) route. The new service is expected to reduce travel time by around two and a half hours and provide improved overnight travel options for long-distance passengers. Alongside this, four Amrit Bharat Express trains were virtually flagged off, offering additional affordable long-distance rail connectivity from West Bengal to major destinations across the country.

The infrastructure package also includes foundation stone laying for four important railway projects. These cover the construction of the Balurghat-Hili railway line, development of a freight maintenance facility at New Jalpaiguri, capacity upgrades at the Siliguri loco shed, and expansion of Vande Bharat train maintenance facilities in the Jalpaiguri district. These works are intended to support smoother passenger operations, improve freight handling capacity, and generate employment in the region.

On the road infrastructure side, the Prime Minister initiated the rehabilitation and four-laning of the Dhupguri-Falakata stretch of National Highway-31D. This highway section is a critical transport corridor in north Bengal and is expected to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and lower logistics costs for businesses operating in the area.

In addition to the INR 3,250 crore projects, separate development works worth around INR 830 crore were also launched in the state. These included the inauguration of the Jayrambati-Barogopinathpur-Maynapur rail line, flagging off additional Amrit Bharat Express services connecting Kolkata with New Delhi, Varanasi, and Chennai, and the development of a cargo handling terminal and inland water transport facilities at Balagarh to support multimodal freight movement.
