A Guwahati-based luxury hospitality company, Mayfair Spring Valley Resort, has secured the official catering contract for India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, marking a first for a Northeast-based firm in premium rail services. The contract was awarded in partnership with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) ahead of the inaugural service between Howrah in West Bengal and Kamakhya (Guwahati) in Assam. The on-board menu has been curated to showcase regional cuisine from West Bengal and Assam, with dishes such as basanti pulao, Assamese joha rice, seasonal vegetable preparations and traditional sweets, designed for overnight travel comfort using locally sourced ingredients. The Vande Bharat Sleeper service is equipped with modern amenities across fully air-conditioned berths and aims to significantly reduce travel time while providing enhanced comfort and regional culinary experiences.
A hospitality firm based in Guwahati has won the catering contract for India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, under a partnership with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), marking a notable milestone for a Northeast-based company in long-distance premium rail service offerings.
Mayfair Spring Valley Resort has been appointed as the official caterer for the overnight Vande Bharat Sleeper service operating between Howrah in West Bengal and Kamakhya in Assam. The service was recently flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is designed to offer enhanced connectivity and comfort on the nearly 1,000-kilometre route linking the eastern and northeastern regions.
Under the arrangement with IRCTC, passengers will be served a menu reflecting the culinary heritage of West Bengal and Assam, prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Offerings are tailored for overnight travel and include regional favourites such as basanti pulao, cholar and moong dal preparations, Assamese joha rice, seasonal vegetable bhajis and traditional sweets like sandesh and coconut burfi. The focus remains on vegetarian meals with balanced spice profiles that resonate with passenger preferences while highlighting local flavours.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train comprises 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, including First AC, AC 2-tier and AC 3-tier classes, accommodating around 823 passengers. It features modern amenities such as ergonomic berths, automatic doors, advanced suspension systems, noise-reduction features and the Kavach anti-collision system. The service aims to significantly cut travel time between Howrah and Kamakhya while providing an elevated travel experience with both comfort and regional dining options onboard.
Mayfair Spring Valley Resort's selection as the official caterer highlights a growing trend of involving regional service providers in premium rail travel experiences, integrating local culture and cuisine into long-distance train services.
