The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is expanding the Aerocity metro station on the Airport Express Line to develop it into a key interchange hub for Delhi-NCR. A key component of the project is the integration of the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor, known as the Golden Line, which is part of the Delhi Metro Phase 4 expansion. Authorities have approved a 2.263 km extension of this corridor from Aerocity to the Terminal 1 station at Indira Gandhi International Airport. This extension will provide direct metro access to the terminal and reduce dependence on road transport for airport travel from south Delhi.
The interchange design allows paid-area connectivity between the Airport Express Line and the Golden Line, enabling smoother passenger movement. The Golden Line platform at Aerocity will be built at a depth of nearly 22 metres and extended to around 290 metres to support interchange operations. Platform-to-platform and concourse-level transfers have been planned to minimise walking distance and congestion.
The station has also been planned as a future triple interchange. Structural provisions have already been incorporated to facilitate a proposed NCR Transport Corporation corridor to Alwar. The Golden Line and the NCRTC corridor will intersect diagonally, allowing future construction without major structural changes to the existing station.
Once operational, the upgraded interchange is expected to significantly improve connectivity for areas such as Tughlakabad, Khanpur and Ambedkar Nagar, offering direct access to the airport and faster connections to other parts of the city. The project adds to Delhi Metro's expanding network, which currently operates 12 corridors covering about 395 km with nearly 289 stations.
