Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) conducted an extensive anti-encroachment drive outside Anand Vihar Bus Terminal after the Delhi High Court lifted a long-standing stay. The operation cleared temporary shops, rehri-patris and other unauthorised roadside structures that had caused congestion, commuter difficulties and high pollution in the area. Officials deployed bulldozers, trucks and over 40 staff during a seven-hour exercise. The civic body had issued prior notices to vendors to vacate voluntarily. Post-drive, the area around the terminal, foot overbridge and nearby railway station was completely free of illegal encroachments.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out a targeted anti-encroachment operation outside Anand Vihar Bus Terminal after the Delhi High Court removed a stay that had prevented earlier enforcement. Ahead of the drive, authorities issued announcements over two consecutive days, giving shopkeepers and vendors a chance to remove unauthorised structures on their own.

During the seven-hour exercise, MCD deployed three bulldozers, seven trucks and over 40 staff along with senior officers. The team cleared temporary shops, rehri-patris and various encroachments that had built up over nearly a decade. Deputy Commissioner Badal Kumar of Shahdara South zone highlighted that the removal of these long-standing structures was crucial not only for easing traffic congestion and improving commuter movement but also as an important step towards pollution control in one of Delhi's 13 major pollution hotspots.

Officials confirmed that after the drive, no illegal roadside markets remained outside the bus terminal or the nearby railway station, and even the foot overbridge was free from obstruction. The encroachments had previously contributed to frequent traffic jams, commuter chaos and deteriorating air quality. The drive is part of a wider civic effort to regulate urban spaces around major transit hubs and ensure that only authorised vendors operate under strict conditions.

Authorities have noted that continued monitoring will be necessary to maintain cleared areas and prevent the re-emergence of illegal structures. The operation is expected to improve overall commuter experience and create safer, more accessible pedestrian pathways in a busy part of the city.
