Synopsis

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) delivered a 140 foot double lane modular steel bridge for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) in just seven days to reduce traffic congestion around Lake Town and VIP Road. This Class 70 bridge, with a 7.5 metre wide carriageway and 100 metric ton load capacity, is the first of its kind in Kolkata, surpassing previous Bailey bridges. GRSE's expertise in rapid fabrication and workflow management made this possible. The Defence PSU, with four shipyards, has built over 800 platforms including 115 warships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has successfully fabricated and installed a 140 foot double lane modular steel bridge for the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) to ease vehicular traffic congestion in Lake Town and VIP Road. The bridge was completed in just seven days, setting a new benchmark for rapid infrastructure deployment in urban areas.

GRSE stated that this is the first time an Advanced Double Lane Modular Steel Bridge (MSB) Class 70 has been launched in Kolkata. The company highlighted that its engineers and taskforce overcame heavy traffic constraints and completed the project using proprietary design, advanced technology, and diligent workflow management.

The bridge features a 7.50 metre wide carriageway, double the width of GRSE's earlier Bailey bridge across Kestopur Canal. Its galvanized steel finish ensures easier maintenance and a longer service life while supporting vehicular loads of up to 100 metric tonnes. Fabricated and launched for KMDA on 16 January, the bridge provides a safer and more efficient crossing for daily commuters in a busy corridor.

GRSE, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence and a Schedule A Mini Ratna Category I company, was established in 1884. It operates four shipyards and has delivered over 800 platforms, including 115 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign countries. Its infrastructure modernization allows it to undertake concurrent construction of multiple ships while executing projects like modular bridges.

The company's experience with complex shipbuilding and infrastructure projects enabled it to deliver this bridge swiftly without compromising quality. This deployment demonstrates the potential of modular steel bridges to relieve urban traffic congestion efficiently and showcases GRSE's engineering and project management capabilities.
