The reconstructed pedestrian skywalk linking Bandra Railway Station (East) and Kalanagar Junction on the Western Express Highway in Bandra (East) has been opened to the public earlier this week. Stretching 680 metres in length and 5.40 metres in width, the elevated walkway features four staircases, two escalators, and 14 CCTV cameras. The skywalk directly connects to the station's foot overbridge, providing safer and faster access to Bandra Court, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), MHADA, and the district collector's office. Officials highlighted its potential to ease congestion on Anant Kanekar Road and improve daily pedestrian movement.
The newly reconstructed pedestrian skywalk connecting Bandra Railway Station (East) to Kalanagar Junction along the Western Express Highway has been opened to the public earlier this week. The project was inaugurated by Mumbai's Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, who emphasised that the structure will significantly improve pedestrian safety and convenience in one of the city's busiest areas.
The skywalk spans 680 metres with an average width of 5.40 metres, providing ample space for pedestrian traffic. Four staircases have been installed at strategic locations, along with two escalators to facilitate easier navigation. For enhanced security, 14 CCTV cameras have been placed along the entire stretch. The walkway directly links to the Bandra station's foot overbridge, allowing commuters safe access to nearby destinations such as Bandra Court, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), MHADA, and the district collector's office.
Officials stated that the skywalk will also reduce travel time for pedestrians and help alleviate congestion on Anant Kanekar Road. It provides an uninterrupted elevated path over one of Mumbai's busiest traffic corridors, making it easier for thousands of daily commuters to move safely above the Western Express Highway traffic.
Construction of the skywalk faced several challenges, including working during limited midnight hours due to heavy vehicular traffic and relocating utility lines under the structure. Despite these constraints, municipal authorities confirmed that the project was completed within the planned timeframe. This reopening restores a critical pedestrian link that had been absent for several years due to earlier dismantling and ongoing infrastructure upgrades in the area.
The skywalk represents an important step in improving Bandra (East)'s urban mobility, as it ensures safer pedestrian movement while accommodating the growing traffic and commuter volume in the region. Authorities said the project aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure in high density areas and strengthen connectivity for daily commuters.
