Synopsis

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to introduce the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) on city buses to enable cashless ticketing. Around 250 buses operating on over 60 routes will adopt the prepaid, rechargeable card, which aims to reduce dependence on cash, speed up boarding, and minimize disputes over ticket payments. Officials are preparing technical systems and training staff for smooth implementation. This move aligns Nashik with other major Indian cities using NCMC and could eventually extend to Metro, tolls, parking, and other transport payments.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to implement the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) on its city bus network. The city?s transport arm, Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (NMPML), manages approximately 250 buses covering over 60 routes within the city and nearby areas. The move is aimed at improving commuter experience by allowing passengers to tap a prepaid card for ticketing, reducing reliance on cash and speeding up transactions.

Currently, passengers pay through cash, travel passes, or digital apps, but these methods sometimes face technical issues or disputes regarding change. With the NCMC, passengers will be able to use a rechargeable, prepaid card, simplifying fare payment and reducing delays during boarding. Officials are working on system integration and staff training before the card becomes operational.

The civic body highlighted that buses will be the first to adopt this cashless system, but NCMC usage is expected to expand to other urban transport services, including Metro rail, toll plazas, and parking facilities. This will provide a unified platform for transit payments and improve overall convenience for commuters.

NMPML has previously implemented technology upgrades such as GPS tracking, automated fare collection, and RFID-based ticketing to modernize bus operations. Introducing NCMC is considered the next step in enhancing public transport infrastructure in Nashik. The city will join other Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Pune, and Nagpur, which have already integrated NCMC into their transit networks.

The rollout is expected to start at the beginning of the upcoming financial year, with detailed guidelines and announcements for commuters to follow. Officials believe the system will improve operational efficiency, reduce cash handling, and provide a smoother experience for daily travelers.
