Synopsis

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has stopped work on the CG Road Mithakhali Circle revamp after the new design left only half the road width for vehicles, triggering severe traffic congestion. The INR 6.5 crore project was part of a larger precinct development plan covering 6.7 km across key city stretches, including Law Garden and Mithakhali. While the plan aimed to improve footpaths, street parking, utilities, and public spaces, residents raised concerns over road bottlenecks. AMC now plans to revise the design before resuming work, ensuring better balance between traffic flow and urban amenities.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has temporarily halted the revamp of the CG Road Mithakhali Circle stretch after the recently implemented design caused significant traffic disruption. The project, costing INR 6.5 crore, was intended to enhance pedestrian spaces, footpaths, parking, and utility zones along the 18-meter-wide stretch. However, these additions reduced the space available for vehicles to just 9 meters, creating daily gridlocks in one of the city's busiest areas.

Public dissatisfaction grew quickly as motorists faced long delays, prompting AMC's standing committee chairman Devang Dani to visit the site. He directed officials to stop all ongoing work immediately and review the design. An AMC source stated that a roads and buildings committee meeting last year had approved the broader Law Garden and Mithakhali Precinct Area Development project at a total cost of INR 99.9 crore plus INR 13.02 crore GST.

The project covers a total of 6.7 km across multiple stretches, including NCC Chowk to Subhadrapura Junction (1.3 km), Mount Carmel School to Jalaram Underpass (2.07 km), GICEA to Panchvati Circle (520 m), Mithakhali Circle to Wagh Bakri Tea Lounge (970 m), Mount Carmel School to Commerce Six Roads (1.4 km), and Shree Virchand Gandhi Chowk to Mithakhali Circle (440 m). The plan included footpaths with plantations, street parking, vending zones, gazebos, benches, sculptures, integrated landscape lighting, traffic signage, and decorative elements to enhance the urban streetscape.

The contract for the work was awarded to Skyway Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, with designs prepared by HCP Design Planning and Management. Construction had started recently on a 500-meter segment from Kukda Circle to Mithakhali Circle, featuring 2.1-meter-wide footpaths on both sides. Combined with parking and utility zones, these consumed half the road width, leaving vehicles with only 9 meters to move.

AMC had included such precinct developments in its 2025-26 budget for several city areas, covering metro, heritage, entertainment, healthcare, education, sports, and cultural precincts. The stoppage now provides officials an opportunity to revise the design, ensuring pedestrian amenities do not compromise essential traffic flow. The corporation has emphasized that work will resume only after the revised design is finalized and approved.
