Synopsis

The Ministry of Railways has approved the addition of third and fourth lines on the Badlapur Karjat suburban section under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3B (MUTP 3B), following clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and agreement from the Maharashtra government. Spanning 32.46 km and covering six stations, the project is estimated at INR 1,324 crore, with funding shared equally between the Railways ministry and the state government. Executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the project will require around 37.79 hectares of land and aims to reduce congestion, improve train scheduling, and support both suburban and freight operations.

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Badlapur and Karjat under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3B (MUTP 3B). The clearance was granted by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, with prior approval from the Maharashtra government. The 32.46 kilometre corridor will run alongside existing tracks and connect six stations: Badlapur, Vangani, Shelu, Neral, Bhivpuri Road, and Karjat. This expansion is expected to enhance capacity and operational efficiency on one of the busiest suburban sections in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.


The project will be executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), and work will begin once the required land is acquired. The plan needs about 37.79 hectares, including private, government, and railway land. The total project cost is estimated at INR 1,324 crore, with funding equally shared by the Railways ministry and the Maharashtra government through Gross Budgetary Support.

Officials noted that the additional lines are crucial for decongesting the Mumbai-Chennai high density corridor, which carries heavy suburban commuter traffic as well as increasing freight movement. The new lines will help segregate suburban services from mainline operations, reducing delays, easing scheduling, and providing smoother services for both local and long distance trains.

The project will also focus on improving passenger safety and station efficiency. It includes station upgrades, boundary protection works, and other infrastructure enhancements aimed at easing commuter movement and operational management. The quadrupling of tracks is expected to improve reliability and punctuality, addressing bottlenecks that currently slow train operations in this busy section.

MRVC officials emphasized that the project will fully segregate suburban and mainline traffic between Kalyan and Karjat. This separation is intended to make commuter services more reliable while also supporting freight operations and long-distance train schedules. Completion is expected within three to four years after land acquisition is finalised, making it a medium-term infrastructure upgrade for the region.

The Badlapur-Karjat project complements other upgrades under MUTP 3, which focus on expanding suburban capacity, modernising stations, and improving overall service quality. The initiative aligns with long-term plans to strengthen Mumbai's suburban rail network and support the growing demand for both commuter and freight transport in the metropolitan region.
