West Bengal distributes 2.26 lakh land deeds to boost housing rights

29 Aug 2025

Since 2011, the West Bengal government has distributed 2.26 lakh land deeds for home construction, along with 1.80 lakh agricultural deeds and 47,000 forest deeds, strengthening land rights for vulnerable communities. Purba Bardhaman district alone has received 28,840 home deeds. The initiative complements the state's Banglar Bari scheme, launched in December 2024, which provides up to INR 1.20 lakh for rural families to build permanent homes. Despite funding hurdles from the Centre and some implementation challenges, the program has advanced housing access. By granting legal, inheritable ownership, the land deeds empower families with stability, collateral for credit, and a path to long-term economic security.Read more
