Months after the announcement of MMR as a global economic growth hub, the Maharashtra government has yet to assign implementing agencies for several key projects under this initiative. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has identified 35 major infrastructure and redevelopment works to transform MMR into a USD 300 billion economy by 2050. These include logistics parks, transit-oriented development, tourism infrastructure, and slum rehabilitation. However, a lack of agency allocation is delaying implementation. Although the state has made some progress, gaps remain, especially in redeveloping 2.2 million slum dwellings and coordinating between central and state bodies.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has commenced operations at the West Container Terminal (WCT) in Colombo, developed through a joint venture with Sri Lanka's John Keells Holdings and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. This is the first Indian private sector investment in Sri Lanka's port infrastructure. The terminal, which saw INR 4,900 crore in investment, is expected to handle transshipment traffic between India and Southeast Asia. Operations begin ahead of the first scheduled vessel call in May, with the facility projected to be fully functional by 2025.

In a major step towards fast-tracking infrastructure development across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) secured financing agreements worth INR 4 lakh crore earlier this week. Signed during the India Global Forum's 'NXT25' summit in Mumbai, the agreements involve several prominent public sector financial institutions. HUDCO committed INR 1.5 lakh crore towards housing and urban projects, while REC and PFC each pledged INR 1 lakh crore for energy and mobility development. Additionally, IRFC contributed INR 50,000 crore for metro and rail connectivity, and NaBFID allocated INR 7,000 crore for smart urban infrastructure. The Maharashtra government has approved INR 3,040 crore in funding for the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) to support the development of the Vadhvan Port in Dahanu taluka, Palghar district. Envisioned as a satellite port to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the project will be implemented through Vadhvan Port Project Ltd, a joint venture between JNPA and MMB. While JNPA will cover 74% of the INR 26,220 crore project cost, the state will contribute the remaining 26%. The initiative is being promoted as a major step towards bolstering Maharashtra's port infrastructure and boosting economic growth.Read more

Guntur district is undergoing a major road infrastructure upgrade with over INR 3,000 crore invested in key projects, including the Kondamodu-Perecherla Highway (INR 1,032.52 crore) and the expansion of NH 167-A from Vadarevu to Piduguralla (INR 1,064.24 crore). These developments aim to ease traffic, link Andhra Pradesh with Telangana, and promote beach tourism and exports from Chirala. Additional works like the Dachepalli-Macherla and Chilakaluripet-Nekarikallu highways are also progressing. With over 380 hectares under land acquisition, the region is set for improved interstate access, industrial growth, and better quality of life for residents across Palnadu, Bapatla, and beyond.Read more

Arunachal Pradesh is witnessing a strategic infrastructure boom with the INR 42,000 crore Arunachal Frontier Highway along the LAC, targeting completion by March 2027. Spanning up to 2,000 km, the highway enhances troop mobility and counters China's border infrastructure. Complementing this is the nearly completed 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project, with its first 750 MW to go live by March 2025. Additionally, INR 398 crore has been allocated for 19 road projects under CRIF in FY25, while INR 228 crore worth of development works are underway in West Kameng. Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) has completed 18 of its 21 projects under the Smart City Mission, with three still in progress. The state government has directed NMSCDCL to transfer completed projects to Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). NMSCDCL will complete two ongoing projects by April and finish the third by December. The initiative, valued at INR 1,122 crore, includes INR 175.74 crore under the PPP model. NMSCDCL has received INR 897.75 crore but awaits INR 48.51 crore from NMC. Upon completion, these projects will enhance Nashik's infrastructure, reinforcing sustainable urban development and transformation efforts.Read more

The Telangana government has reversed its decision to demolish the Kancha Gachibowli site and will now develop it into one of the world's largest eco-parks. This plan includes land from the University of Hyderabad, which may relocate to the upcoming Future City in exchange for 100 acres and INR 1,000 crore. The eco-park will feature biodiversity zones, observatories, green trails, and wildlife habitats, designed using a micro-ecosystem approach. Environmentalists, students, and conservationists will oversee the project. Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, 59 significant defects were identified across National Highway (NH) projects in 15 Indian states, contributing to recurrent accidents and hazardous 'black spots'. In Parliament, Minister Nitin Gadkari attributed numerous road fatalities to civil engineering errors and poor-quality Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). The issues include pavement failures, retaining wall collapses, bridge damage, and structural deformities, with several contractors facing penalties and rectification mandates. As NH infrastructure expands from 91,287 km in 2014 to 1.46 lakh km currently, the government is intensifying scrutiny of highway safety and construction standards.

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will introduce new Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste management guidelines from April 21. Minor waste can be disposed of free at 15 designated locations, while waste generators with 1-20 tonnes must arrange disposal or use GCC services for INR 2,500 per tonne. Bulk waste generators (20-300 tonnes) must transport waste to designated processing centers with a processing fee of INR 800 per tonne. Fines will be imposed for illegal dumping, with penalties up to INR 5,000 for non-compliance and INR 25,000 for improper disposal during large-scale projects.
