Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced an INR 180 crore investment to establish a 65,000 square-foot hydrogen innovation centre at IIT Madras' Thaiyur campus in Chennai, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Guidance Tamil Nadu. Supported by the Tamil Nadu government, the centre, set to open by 2026, will focus on green hydrogen development and fuel cell technology. This initiative underscores Tamil Nadu's growing role in sustainable automotive innovation, aligning with global shifts towards eco-friendly transportation and bolstering the state's position as a leader in the sector.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), a player in the Indian automotive sector, has announced a significant investment of INR 180 crore to establish a dedicated hydrogen innovation centre in Chennai. This collaboration is set to take place with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and Guidance Tamil Nadu, under the support of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The centre will occupy an area of 65,000 square feet on the IIT-Madras' Thaiyur campus.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility was officiated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who emphasised the importance of this initiative. Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Chief Manufacturing Officer of HMIL, highlighted the significance of the centre, emphasising that it will play a crucial role in promoting hydrogen as a clean and emission-free energy source for future transportation solutions. The hydrogen innovation centre is expected to commence operations by 2026 and will be equipped with various cutting-edge facilities. These include an electrolyser test rig for green hydrogen development, a fuel cell fabrication line aimed at local manufacturing, and a hydrogen refuelling station for practical mobility research.
Hyundai's investment comes at a time when the automotive industry is increasingly focusing on sustainable practices. As global concerns about climate change grow, hydrogen fuel is gaining attention for its potential to replace conventional fuels in vehicles. Hydrogen, when used in fuel cells, produces only water as a byproduct, making it a strong candidate for eco-friendly transportation.
In addition to Hyundai's investment in hydrogen technology, there are other developments in the Tamil Nadu automotive sector. The Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India Pvt Ltd has expanded its infrastructure to accommodate an additional 2,000 employees. This new workspace, which spans 1.38 lakh square feet, was also launched virtually by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Located in Ascendas IT Park within the Mahindra World City SEZ, this centre focuses on advanced technology areas including software validation, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing.
The simultaneous growth of both Hyundai and Renault Nissan in Tamil Nadu highlights the state's attractive environment for automotive manufacturers and technology innovators. The government's proactive support for such initiatives, including infrastructure upgrades and investment in research and development, reflects its commitment to making Tamil Nadu a hub for automotive innovation.
