The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) has started preliminary work on the Metro 11 underground corridor connecting Wadala to Regal Cinema, involving a geo-technical survey crucial for the Detailed Project Report. This revised route, passing through Byculla, Bhendi Bazar, and Crawford Market, aims to better serve high-density areas and commercial districts. Expected to cost INR 16,000 crore, the project will reduce reliance on buses and taxis in congested areas, offering a more efficient transportation alternative. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is prepared to discuss funding once approvals are in place, marking a significant step in enhancing Mumbai's infrastructure.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) has embarked on preliminary work for the Metro 11 underground corridor, set to link Wadala with Regal Cinema. MMRCL plans to appoint an agency to conduct a geotechnical survey along the proposed route, a critical step for the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Renowned for successfully completing the 33.5 km Metro 3 corridor, MMRCL once again spearheads this ambitious project. They revised the route, initially envisioned to stretch from Wadala to CSMT, to better cater to the city's dynamic needs.
MMRCL's Director of Planning, R. Ramanna, stated that they have issued tenders for the geotechnical survey. This crucial data will guide the design of structures and the selection of appropriate construction methods, aiming to minimize damage to existing buildings. The survey will involve drilling boreholes at 500-meter intervals along the twin tunnel alignment, with depths ranging from 10 to 20 meters and beyond, depending on the site. The revised route will traverse Wadala to the Eastern waterfront, passing through Byculla, Bhendi Bazar, Crawford Market, and culminating at S P Mukherjee Chowk (Regal Cinema Circle).
This new alignment aims to better serve high-density areas and commercial districts than the previous route, which paralleled the harbour line and failed to fully exploit its ridership potential. The route will intersect major railway lines, including the Harbour and Central Railway lines, and will navigate through bustling areas like Byculla. The terminal at S. P. Mukherjee Chowk will attract a significant number of commuters, including tourists visiting the Gateway of India and shoppers frequenting Colaba's markets.
Given the dense population and heritage nature of the areas along the route, meticulous planning will be essential to minimise disruptions. The introduction of this metro line will substantially reduce reliance on buses and taxis in the CSMT-Ballard Pier-Colaba corridor, providing a more efficient and cost-effective transportation alternative, especially in congested areas like Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar. Furthermore, the Crawford Market area, with its status as one of the oldest and busiest retail and wholesale hubs, represents a significant catchment area.
The Metro 11 project comes with an estimated cost of INR 16,000 crore. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has expressed its readiness to begin discussions and conduct due diligence for funding this project once the necessary approvals are in place. This strategic initiative will enhance Mumbai's transportation infrastructure, addressing both commuter convenience and urban development needs. By improving connectivity and reducing congestion, Metro 11 promises to play a pivotal role in the city's ongoing transformation into a modern, efficient urban hub.
