The extended Green Line of Namma Metro on Tumakuru Road, spanning from Nagasandra to Madavara (BIEC), will begin commercial operations by October. Maheshwar Rao, Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), confirmed that trial runs will soon commence on the three-kilometre stretch. Part of Phase II of Namma Metro, this extension adds three new stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara. Officials expect the line to open once the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) grants the necessary safety clearance, expected by September.

This extension will increase the metro network in Bangalore to 76 kilometres. Currently, trains on the Green Line terminate at Nagasandra. With the new extension, train services will operate up to Madavara. BMRCL will adjust the frequency of these services based on passenger demand. They expect that the extended line will attract an additional 25,000 to 30,000 daily riders. A BMRCL official reported that construction at Madavara is nearing completion. The team established traction power at the other two stations and will soon complete it at Madavara.

Preparations for trial tests on the line are underway, set to commence within the next couple of weeks. The extension of the Metro line to Madavara offers significant benefits for Bengaluru residents. It will provide seamless access to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, a prominent venue for consumer and industrial expos. Commuters from Nelamangala and nearby villages using KSRTC buses will be able to transfer to the Metro, avoiding city traffic congestion. The provision of parking spaces for long-distance buses at Madavara station will enhance travel convenience. Under Phase II, BMRCL has expanded its two operational Metro lines in four directions. Three of these extensions-spanning from Mysuru Road to Challaghatta, from Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute, and from Byappanahalli to Whitefield-have been launched for commercial use in a phased approach.

Despite facing multiple delays due to construction setbacks, land acquisition issues with NICE authorities, and the pandemic, the project is now nearing completion. The ongoing Metro expansion includes three new lines under phases II, IIA, and IIB. These lines are: one connecting Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara, another linking RV Road to Bommasandra, and a third extending from Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport. A decade ago, the transport department and traffic police considered relocating private bus operations to locations such as Kengeri, Madavara, and KR Puram; however, the plan was ultimately abandoned.

This milestone represents a significant achievement for BMRCL and will enhance the city's public transportation network. BMRCL is also preparing to launch the much expected Yellow Line by the end of this year. This 19.15-kilometre route will connect RV Road to Bommasandra, featuring a group of at least eight trains running every 15 minutes.

The Green Line extension and the upcoming Yellow Line signify major advancements in Bangalore's metro network, promising improved connectivity and convenience for the city's residents and visitors. These developments reflect BMRCL's commitment to expanding and enhancing Bangalore's public transportation infrastructure, addressing the city's growing transit needs.
