Mumbai's 112-year-old Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) will shut down completely from midnight on July 31, 2024, for a major demolition and reconstruction project. The bridge, vital for connecting Sion East and West, will be rebuilt to enhance safety and traffic flow. The project, beginning August 1, 2024, and ending July 31, 2026, will significantly impact traffic. Diversion plans include rerouting through Sion Hospital Junction, K.K. Krishnan Menon Road, and St. Rohidas Marg. No-parking zones will be enforced to manage congestion. Despite short-term inconveniences, the new bridge promises improved commute efficiency.
A major infrastructure project is about to change Mumbai's daily commute for the next three years. The historic Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB), connecting Sion East and West for decades, will shut down completely from midnight on July 31st, 2024, for demolition and reconstruction.
The 112-year-old bridge has shown signs of wear and tear and is no longer considered safe for heavy vehicles. To address this issue and improve traffic flow in the long run, authorities have decided on a complete rebuild. The demolition will begin on August 1st, 2024, and the entire project is expected to be finished by July 31st, 2026.
The closure of the Sion ROB will significantly impact traffic flow in central Mumbai. To minimise disruption, the traffic police have devised a comprehensive diversion plan.
For those travelling southbound on Dr. B.A. Road, be prepared for detours. You will be diverted via Sion Hospital Junction (avoiding the bridge) and Sulochana Shetty Road. If you're headed towards Kurla, expect a longer commute for the next 3 months, as this route is anticipated to be heavily congested. Traffic heading towards Kurla and Dharavi will use K.K. Krishnan Menon Road and St. Rohidas Marg. Commuters going to the Western Express Highway and Bandra will be rerouted through Sion-Mahim Link Road and Kalanagar Junction.
Eastbound traffic will also be affected. Light vehicles from Kurla will be diverted via St. Rohidas Road and K.K. Krishnan Menon Marg. Heavy vehicles will be rerouted through Dharavi Depot Road and Sion Bandra Link Road.
To further ease congestion, authorities have implemented a no-parking rule along several key roads in the area, including the Sion-Mahim Link Road and Sulochana Shetty Road near Sion Hospital Junction.
The closure of the Sion ROB will undoubtedly cause inconvenience for commuters in the short term. However, the project aims to deliver a safer, more modern bridge that can handle increased traffic flow in the future. Following the project's completion, residents can expect a smoother and more efficient commute across Sion.
