The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, in partnership with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, is undertaking a significant redevelopment project in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, Ghatkopar. Over 14,224 families, or 85 percent of residents, have qualified for new housing. The project, approved by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, coincides with the Eastern Freeway expansion to Thane and involves an INR 3,200 crore investment. It aims to rehabilitate 16,575 slum dwellers, improving their living conditions. The initiative will create 75 lakh square feet of commercial space, potentially generating INR 10,000 crore in revenue, and will also incorporate an additional 5,000 flats for the MMRDA.
To date, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has qualified 14,224 families, representing over 85 percent of the residents in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar's slums in Ghatkopar, for the housing project. This project, in collaboration with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), marks a significant milestone in addressing urban poverty and improving living conditions. The SRA and MMRDA have entered into a joint agreement. Under this agreement, the SRA conducted thorough survey work to compile a list of eligible tenants, while the MMRDA is responsible for the redevelopment project.
This initiative coincides with the proposed expansion of the Eastern Freeway from Cheddha Nagar in Ghatkopar to Thane, a project poised to enhance the region's infrastructure significantly. An official from the SRA noted that they have undertaken an exhaustive survey over the past five months. During this period, surveyors visited each household to verify residents' documents. The official announced that they released the final list of eligible beneficiaries on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in the redevelopment efforts. Those verified as eligible will proceed to the subsequent stages of the project, while families who have not yet submitted valid documents to the SRA will have an additional two months to comply.
On March 5, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde granted approval to the MMRDA during an authority meeting, allowing the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar slum redevelopment project in Ghatkopar to move forward. This project, with an estimated development cost of approximately INR 3,200 crore, will clear land for the Eastern Freeway extension to Thane. The redevelopment plan covers 33.15 hectares of land, aiming to rehabilitate 16,575 slum dwellers in the Ramabai Nagar area. The project intends to provide these residents with new housing, significantly improving their living standards.
This initiative highlights the government's commitment to addressing urban poverty and infrastructure development comprehensively. This redevelopment project marks MMRDA's first venture into slum redevelopment. Additionally, the project will provide around 5,000 flats to the MMRDA, further bolstering the region's housing stock. The redevelopment project in Ramabai Nagar will generate 75 lakh square feet of built-up area for commercial sale. The MMRDA anticipates that the revenue generated from this developed space will approximate INR 10,000 crore.
The collaboration between the SRA and MMRDA exemplifies a concerted effort to transform the urban landscape and enhance the quality of life for thousands of residents. The Ramabai Nagar project, thus, stands as a testament to the potential of coordinated urban development initiatives, paving the way for a more organised and prosperous urban future.
