The link will connect Plot C-80 to Plot C-79, running below the BKC connector from SEBI building to Avenue 5 and Avenue 3. This signal-free route aims to distribute traffic across three alternative routes, improving flow and reducing congestion. It will enhance connectivity for vehicles from the BKC connector to key locations like the National Stock Exchange and Mumbai Cricket Association. The estimated construction cost is INR 3.97 crore, with bids due by July 19.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is taking steps to address traffic congestion at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) connector and BKC One Junction. The MMRDA has proposed the construction of a new link designed to alleviate the heavy traffic flow in these areas. This proposed link will connect Plot C-80 to Plot C-79, situated below the existing BKC connector, and will extend from the SEBI building to Avenue 5 (BKC connector road) and Avenue 3 (WeWork).
The new route is planned to facilitate signal-free movement, thereby reducing travel time and distributing traffic across three alternative routes. This redistribution is expected to lead to faster and more efficient traffic dispersal. Additionally, the link will provide uninterrupted connectivity to vehicles using the BKC connector and those travelling to and from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The link is anticipated to enhance smoother traffic flow towards significant destinations such as the G-Block of the Mumbai Cricket Association, various consulates, MTNL, and other key locations within the area.
Previously, the MMRDA had constructed the elevated BKC connector to improve accessibility between Bandra-Kurla Complex's G Block and the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). This elevated connector, which opened to traffic on November 10, 2019, serves as the shortest route between the Western Express Highway (WEH) and the EEH, offering a more direct alternative compared to the Santacruz Chembur Link Road and the Sion-Dharavi-Kalanagar route. Despite its utility, the BKC connector experiences significant traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, impacting the internal roads of the BKC.
Currently, all traffic using the BKC connector navigates through an 18-metre narrow road at BKC via the J-17 junction, located in front of the Punjab National Bank road. This results in severe congestion at both the BKC One junction and the BKC connector. The introduction of the new link aims to mitigate these congestion issues by providing an additional route, thus easing the traffic load on the existing infrastructure.
The planned new road will be a three-lane concrete thoroughfare in both directions, complemented by footpaths on either side. The MMRDA has already invited bids for the construction of this new road, with the project estimated to cost approximately INR 3.97 crore. Interested contractors and firms must submit their bids by July 19.
This new infrastructure project is a part of the MMRDA's ongoing efforts to improve traffic conditions and enhance accessibility within the BKC area. By offering alternative routes and reducing bottlenecks, the MMRDA aims to create a more efficient traffic flow and reduce travel times for commuters. The proposed link is expected to significantly contribute to the overall improvement of traffic management in one of Mumbai's busiest commercial hubs.
