Mumbai Metro Line 3 completion delayed to December 2024

Synopsis

The completion of Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) has been delayed to December 2024, as announced after a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Initially set for September 2024, the project's first phase - a crucial 9.6 km stretch between SEEPZ and Bandra Kurla Complex - will now be operational by December. The state government has streamlined funding, directly providing INR 1,163 crore to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation. With 98% of the work completed, the total project cost stands at INR 37,275.50 crore. The new deadline aims to ease traffic congestion, especially with the full 33.7 km line eventually connecting Cuffe Parade to SEEPZ.

The completion date for the Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) has been pushed back to December 2024. This revised deadline follows a cabinet meeting earlier this week, chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Originally scheduled to be completed by September 2024, the project has faced delays.

The first phase of Line 3, a critical 9.6 kilometre stretch connecting SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone) and Bandra Kurla Complex, will be operational by December. This initial section will provide a much-needed connection for commuters travelling between these key business districts in Mumbai, potentially reducing traffic congestion on these routes.

The state government has taken steps to expedite project completion by committing to provide its share of INR 1,163 crore directly to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). Previously, these funds were routed through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and this change aims to streamline the funding process.

The project is nearing completion, with 98% of the work reportedly finished. The revised total cost of the project is INR 37,275.50 crore. This increase may reflect additional costs incurred due to project delays.

The delay in Line 3's completion means continued reliance on existing congested roads for many commuters. However, the opening of the first phase by December should offer some relief, particularly for those travelling between SEEPZ and Bandra Kurla Complex. The completed line, which will eventually connect Cuffe Parade to SEEPZ with a total length of 33.7 kilometres, is expected to significantly improve connectivity within Mumbai, reducing travel times and congestion for commuters across the city. While a specific timeline for the completion of the entire line has not been announced, residents can expect the project to progress steadily with the revised deadline and secured funding.
