Construction on the Kolkata Metro's Orange Line, with a total length of 29.87 km, is progressing rapidly, bringing the dream of a faster commute between New Garia and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport a step closer.

While trains are already running on the initial 5.40 km stretch from Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, the Kolkata Metro is gearing up to extend services further north to Beleghata station, covering an additional 4.39 km. This extension has received all necessary safety clearances and is expected to launch very soon.

The expansion of the Orange Line is a significant development for the city's estimated population of over 14.8 million people. This rapid transit system will drastically improve connectivity between the eastern and southern fringes of Kolkata, including the New Town and Rajarhat townships, with the rest of the city. By reducing traffic congestion, the metro will not only ease commutes but also potentially enhance the attractiveness of these areas for residents and businesses. A shorter commute translates to more time saved and potentially increased productivity.

Work on the remaining stretch of the Orange Line, connecting New Town to the airport, is progressing smoothly. This 9 km section, reaching completion with 90% of civil engineering work finalised, will boast 10 new stations. These stations are being designed with a focus on modern amenities and accessibility, featuring features like escalators, lifts, and tactile flooring for the visually impaired.

The Kolkata Metro's expansion, particularly the Orange Line, is expected to have a positive impact on the city's real estate market. Areas along the new metro route, especially those closer to new stations within a 500-metre radius, could see increased property value and rental demand due to improved accessibility and reduced commute times. This presents an opportunity for potential investors and residents seeking convenient locations with good connectivity to other parts of the city.

The Kolkata Metro's ongoing development signifies a commitment to improving the city's infrastructure and public transportation network. The Orange Line, upon completion, will offer a faster and more convenient travel option for residents, potentially leading to a more connected and dynamic Kolkata. This can further improve the city's liveability and economic prospects.
