Residents in Bangalore's Vajarahalli area, particularly those using Vajarahalli Main Road, can expect some relief as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken stricter action against Provident Apartment for improper wastewater disposal.
On June 13th, the BBMP filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the apartment complex, citing violations under Sections 278 and 283 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.The FIR alleges that untreated wastewater from Provident Apartment, estimated to be millions of liters over time, has been flowing onto Vajarahalli Main Road. This has caused significant damage, creating potholes and craters that disrupt traffic flow and endanger motorists and pedestrians.
A resident of the area, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that this wastewater discharge has become a recurring issue for months. The resident expressed concerns about the foul smell emanating from the stagnant water, along with the potential health risks it poses. With students and motorists frequently using the road, exposure to the wastewater raises concerns about skin infections and other health problems.
The BBMP assistant engineer, Guruprasad, confirmed that this wasn't the first time they had addressed the issue. He stated that he had previously warned the apartment complex about the improper disposal and even filed a police complaint a few months ago. This latest FIR marks the second time the BBMP has resorted to legal action, highlighting the seriousness of the offense.
The Thalaghattapura Police have reportedly asked Provident Apartments to rectify the wastewater disposal issue immediately. With the BBMP taking a firmer stand and pursuing legal action, residents hope for a swift resolution. This includes ensuring proper waste management practices at Provident Apartment and repairs to the damaged sections of Vajarahalli Main Road.
This incident highlights the importance of responsible waste disposal by apartment complexes and the role of BBMP in enforcing regulations. It also serves as a reminder of the potential health and safety hazards associated with improper wastewater management in urban areas.
