The Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations (FONRWA) is advocating for the regularisation of unauthorised constructions, particularly in LIG, MIG, and HIG housing. This initiative aims to address the housing needs of lower and middle-income residents, including migrant workers. FONRWA emphasises that the lack of affordable housing, compounded by luxury developments, necessitates this regularisation. They also call for new affordable housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, ensuring housing accessibility and generating revenue for the Noida Authority.
The FONRWA, or the Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Associations is calling for unauthorised construction and development to be standardised, focusing on different income category apartments - Low-Income Group (LIG), Middle-Income Group (MIG), and High-Income Group (HIG). The call aims to curb unauthorised construction, which includes room extensions, or converting the balcony into a room. This call will tackle the growing problems associated with low-cost housing for citizens in the lower and middle class demographic of the city.
The RWA, which has 200 members in the city, wrote to Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M and claimed that the absence of affordable housing in the city presents a challenge for the lower-income groups, especially migrant workers who come to the city in search of work. By regularising unauthorised construction, housing issues will be resolved for the lower income groups, while also generating revenue for the Noida Authority.
Yogendra Sharma, president of FONRWA, claims that many residents have resorted to extending rooms or turning balconies into additional rooms in order to accommodate growing families. On behalf of the organisation, he requested the authority to penalise the residents who were building unauthorised extensions. Sharma emphasised that the city was seeing rapid residential expansion in the form of luxury high rises with multiple bedrooms, which are out of reach for migrant workers. The migrant workers, who aspire to find opportunities in an industrial city, are unable to achieve their dreams of building a home.
Secretary General of FONRWA, KK Jain, highlighted that the Noida Authority has not constructed single and double bedroom flats in many years, and private builders build and price their apartments too high for the common man. The hope of the FONRWA is for low-income groups to have access to affordable housing. FONRWA also demanded the construction of affordable housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna. By penalising those creating unauthorised extensions, the Noida Authority can earn revenue, while simultaneously developing housing solutions for those in the economically weaker sections of society.
