Central Railway completes major platform upgrades at Thane and CSMT

Synopsis

The Central Railway carried out platform widening, and extension works at Thane and CSMT stations over the weekend to facilitate longer passenger trains. The work was carried out in a 36-hour shutdown from 1-2 June on the CSMT-Byculla and CSMT-Vadala Rd lines. Platforms 5 and 6 at Thane were widened using concrete blocks to ease passenger movement. Platforms 10 and 11 were extended at CSMT using a new signalling system. Over 250 workers completed the works within the shutdown period to resume train services on schedule.

The Central Railway (CR) completed platform widening and extension work over the weekend to facilitate longer passenger trains. Platforms 5 and 6 at Thane station were widened by 2-3 meters using precast concrete blocks. This allows better movement of passengers on one of Mumbai's busiest platforms handling over 300 suburban as well as mail express trains daily.

At Thane, widening of platforms 5/6 was completed in a 63-hour closure. Hollow concrete blocks were used for the first time to widen the entire platform length. CR deployed 15 senior engineers leading 20 teams of around 400 labourers who worked around the clock to finish on schedule.

An electronic signalling system was also installed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to extend platforms 10 and 11. After extending platform 11 and 12 by 385 meters last year, the total platform length has increased to 690 meters enabling it to accommodate 24 coach trains.

The work was carried out in a 36-hour shutdown from 1-2 June on the CSMT-Byculla and CSMT-Vadala Rd lines. Over 250 workers assembled and dismantled track switches, erected overhead equipment (OHE) structures including two 53-meter portals to cover all 10 platforms.

To ensure safety during the work, 930 suburban trains were cancelled with some mail/express trains also cancelled or shortened at stations like Dadar, Panvel, Nashik, Manmad and Pune. The upgrades will enhance train handling capacity on CR's busy routes.

The modernization of platforms is an important part of improving Mumbai's overburdened suburban rail network. By upgrading platform infrastructure to handle longer trains, Central Railway can efficiently transport more commuters every day. While shutdowns cause short-term travel disruptions, the completed works will benefit thousands of daily passengers through increased carrying capacity and a more comfortable travel experience once train services resume as normal.
