The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has established a 24-hour Control Room to address various issues that may arise during the upcoming monsoon season, from June 1, 2024, to September 30, 2024. The Control Room's primary objective is to minimize the inconvenience caused by factors such as uprooting of trees, waterlogging, accidents, traffic snarls, potholes, and any other concerns related to MMRDA projects.

The emergency contact numbers for the Control Room are 022-26591241, 022-26594176, 8657402090, and the toll-free number 1800228801.

Additionally, the Metro team will have over 300 engineers and workers to ensure safety at different project sites within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) during the monsoon season. Furthermore, 19 emergency response teams, each comprising one engineer and 10 labourers, will be ready to handle any emergencies that may arise.

To mitigate risks during the rainy season, the MMRDA has made various preparations, including the installation of 131 water pumping pumps for efficient drainage, adjusting barricades to maintain traffic flow, removing soil piles, repairing drains and dividers, and testing electrical equipment.

India's longest sea bridge, Atal Setu, has also taken comprehensive measures for safety and continuous access during the monsoon. This includes the provision of adequate capacity pumps to avoid flooding at the interchange area, an emergency response team to address any issues, regular patrols, coordination with local authorities and the police, and the availability of an Ambulance, Fire Rescue Vehicle, and Vehicle Tow Crane around the clock. The toll-free number for Atal Setu is 1800 203 1818.

Similarly, the Surya Project in Vasai-Virar aims to ensure uninterrupted water supply despite the challenges posed by the monsoon season. The intake pumps are elevated two meters above high flood levels, and a state-of-the-art laboratory at the Water Treatment Plant adheres to strict water quality standards.

MMRDA Commissioner, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, emphasizes that safety remains the top priority as the organization gears up for the monsoon season. The Heads of Departments have been instructed to strictly adhere to safety measures and follow norms to ensure the smooth functioning of MMRDA projects. The MMRDA is also committed to promptly providing emergency assistance to other organizations if needed.

For any complaints during the monsoon season, the MMRDA Control Room staff will analyse and forward them to the concerned engineer/officer. If the complaint does not pertain to MMRDA, it will be conveyed to the relevant agencies like Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), or Railways. The Control Room aims to provide status updates to the complainant regarding the action taken.

Currently, the MMRDA is carrying out various projects like the Metro rail, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Airoli-Katai naka tunnel-cum-elevated road project, Sewri-Worli connector, Chheda Nagar Junction improvement project and works related to several roads and bridges in the city.

The MMRDA's proactive approach to monsoon preparedness demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the region's infrastructure and providing prompt assistance to the public. By establishing a dedicated Control Room and implementing a range of preventative and responsive measures, the authority is set to effectively address the challenges of the upcoming monsoon season, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in the development and maintenance of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
