Maha Mumbai Metro boosted voter turnout through its 'SVEEP' initiative

Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) announced that over 1,13,000 people took advantage of the special 10% discount on ticket fares offered for election day.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which operates the Mumbai Metro, supported democracy and civic participation through a special discount for commuters on the Lok Sabha election voting day of May 20th, 2024. Passengers using Lines 2A and 7 of the Mumbai Metro for travelling for voting were given a 10% discount on fares when using their Mumbai 1 Card, paper QR tickets or paper tickets.

Metro Line 2A runs between Andheri West and Dahisar East, and Metro Line 7 operates between Dahisar East and Andheri East.

This initiative was aimed at making it more convenient for Mumbaikars to reach their designated polling stations and fulfil their civic duty by casting their vote.

With over 90 million passengers annually, the Mumbai Metro network plays a crucial role in transportation across the region. By offering discounted travel for voters, more citizens were empowered to access their polling booths and take part in deciding the nation's leaders.

The MMRDA actively worked to boost voter turnout and electoral participation among metro commuters. Maha Mumbai metro actively participated in SVEEP - Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation - to encourage metro riders to fulfill their civic duty and vote in elections. Till 8 pm on 20th May, around 1,13,414 passengers had travelled from Metro 2A and 7 and availed the special discount, as per MMMOCL data.
