The Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has received environmental clearance for its ambitious Global City project coming up near Gurugram. Spread over 1,000 acres, the project will develop residential, industrial and commercial areas in sectors 36B, 37A and 37B. Costing INR 940 crore, phase 1 covering 587 acres will be completed by 2026 and include roads, drainage, utilities and landscaping. The unique feature is a 10km underground utility tunnel to avoid future road digging. Global City is planned as a self-sufficient township with a focus on modern technology and future-oriented industries, low carbon green infrastructure, ease of living, skilling of people, and employment generation.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has approved the environmental clearance for Haryana government's ambitious Global City project in Gurugram.
The project is being developed by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC). The Global City is coming up in sectors 36B, 37A and 37B of Gurugram near the recently opened Dwarka Expressway. It will cover around 1,000 acres and have residential, industrial and commercial areas.
An official from HSIIDC said the Union Environment Ministry has granted the crucial environmental nod for the project. This will help expedite work on the ground. A public notice regarding the clearance has also been issued.
Officials say this move will aid in attracting more investors and partners for Global City.
The Global City project was conceived in 2019 and the tender for the first phase was awarded in September 2023.
Work has started on developing infrastructure like roads, electricity, water supply in the 587 acres earmarked for phase 1, officials said. Phase 1 will cost an estimated INR 940 crore and be completed by December 2026. It will include 13km of internal roads, 26 km of stormwater drains, 12 km each of water pipelines and recycled water lines, landscaping across 82 acres and a 10km utility tunnel.
One unique aspect is the utility tunnel below roads to house water, telecom and power lines. With such a tunnel in place, there will be no need for road digging to attend to faults or upgrade the utility network in the future.
The Global City will have dedicated pathways for walkers and cyclists. Various modes of public transport, such as the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the Gurugram-Bawal metro corridor are likely to pass through the city. Interstate and intercity bus terminals will be developed near the township, which will boost connectivity in the region. It will have 60-metre-wide arterial roads and 45-metre-wide sub-arterial roads.
Officials said that Global City is planned as a self-sufficient township with a focus on modern technology and future-oriented industries, low carbon green infrastructure, ease of living, skilling of people, and employment generation. Once completed, it is expected to boost real estate and industrial investment in the region, helping Gurugram transition into a smart and future-ready city. The project approval is a major step forward for Haryana's vision of an eco-friendly and well-connected urban centre.
