In a recent development in Kolkata, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) buildings department has taken action against promoters of six illegal buildings situated near the site of a collapsed building. The buildings, located in Azhar Molla Bagan, have been under scrutiny since the tragic incident occurred. Among these structures, one building is reported to be tilting dangerously, necessitating its demolition to avert another potential disaster.

Efforts are underway to locate three other buildings in the vicinity that have also shown signs of tilting. The fate of these structures will be determined after a hearing scheduled to take place at the civic headquarters later. Promoters of the illegal constructions will be summoned to the hearing, where they will be required to provide explanations for engaging in unauthorized building activities.

Depending on the assessment made during the hearing, certain portions of the buildings deemed unsafe may face demolition orders. Failure to comply with these orders will prompt the deployment of KMC demolition teams to carry out the necessary actions.

The buildings slated for demolition will be vacated prior to the commencement of the demolition process. The looming threat of demolition has brought harsh realities closer to home for buyers of illegal flats in the Garden Reach area. Many individuals who purchased flats at lower prices from local promoters and are now facing uncertainty regarding the fate of their homes.

Concerns are particularly acute for residents whose buildings have tilted towards neighboring structures, with fears of either imminent demolition or long-term structural damage looming large. The prevalence of cash transactions in the sale and purchase of these illegal buildings has further complicated matters, leaving little to no paper trail for regulatory authorities to follow.

Mayor Firhad Hakim reiterated the city's zero-tolerance stance on illegal constructions, emphasizing the urgent need to address the proliferation of unauthorized buildings in Kolkata. With the recent tragedy serving as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such structures, the municipality is committed to taking decisive action to prevent future catastrophes.
