Hyatt Hotels is looking to significantly expand its presence in India over the next two years. The US-based hospitality company plans to open seven new hotels across the country by 2024, adding about 1,115 new rooms under its various brands. This planned expansion is part of Hyatt's goal to grow its portfolio in Southwest Asia to more than 55 hotels by 2024.
Of the planned expansion, the Hyatt Regency brand has slated openings of Hyatt Regency Kasauli and Hyatt Regency Ghaziabad, while the Hyatt Place brand is expected to enter three new locations - Aurangabad, Haridwar and Dhaka (Bangladesh). Hyatt Centric will expand its portfolio with expected openings in Hebbal, Bengaluru and Ballygunge, Kolkata.
Hyatt has seen strong performance in India recently. In 2023, RevPAR (revenue per available room) grew 33% year-over-year driven by occupancy gains and higher average daily rates. The company's leisure and wedding segment witnessed 50% annual growth last year as well.
According to Sunjae Sharma, Hyatt's managing director for India and Southwest Asia, this growth has been fueled by shifting consumer mindsets, particularly among Gen Z and millennials who are traveling more post-pandemic. He notes that improved connectivity has boosted domestic tourism in India.
To capitalize on the rise in domestic travel, Hyatt introduced its JdV brand in India earlier this year. It now has nine brands locally including Andaz, Alila, Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt and others. In 2023 alone, Hyatt expanded its footprint in India with new hotels in Bodh Gaya, Vijaywada, Goa and Dehradun.
Looking ahead, Hyatt plans to debut its Unbound Collection in India in 2025, renovating the historic Noor-Us-Sabah palace in Bhopal. India represents one of Hyatt's largest markets globally after the US and China. The company aims for a balanced portfolio focused on luxury, loyalty, leisure, lifestyle and wellness segments.
Sharma emphasized Hyatt's focus on exceptional service and experiences to become the preferred brand. This strategic focus on quality experiences over quantity aligns with Hyatt's commitment to customer satisfaction. Robust growth has been fueled by experiential packages covering culinary experiences, spas, sports and more. Hyatts loyalty programme, which currently has more than 1.5 million members from India, has seen a strong double-digit growth in new memberships since 2021.
