The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken an important step by making online applications mandatory for receiving clearance for building designs for new structures. Mayor Firhad Hakim stated that manual applications will only be accepted for renovations to existing structures or the reconstruction of insecure buildings. This step is consistent with the KMC's attempts to improve openness and efficiency in the approval process, as the online system, which was implemented a few years ago, has received excellent response from citizens.

Hakim stressed the online system's effectiveness, citing its capacity to streamline processes and provide a faster approval schedule than the traditional approach, which normally took 45 days for even simple proposals without legal problems. Now, with the online system in place, the approval process has been condensed to a mere fortnight, significantly reducing the waiting period for applicants.

An official from the KMC building department revealed that the civic body processes roughly 250 development plans per month. The use of an online system has transformed the approval process, dramatically lowering the time and effort necessary to approve building designs. To address the predicted rush in applications as a result of the new policy, the KMC has warned executive engineers in critical areas like Behala, the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt, Garia, and other regions off the EM Bypass to prepare for increased workload in plan approvals. These localities have seen a significant increase in construction activity, demanding proactive efforts by civic authorities to efficiently handle the influx of applications.

Furthermore, the KMC has invested in creating advanced network infrastructure at its headquarters and borough offices. Specialized software solutions have been implemented to improve the scrutiny of online applications and simplify the approval process. Additionally, the civic body has planned workshops to educate architects and professional building surveyors about the complexities of the new online system.

Mayor Hakim expressed confidence in individuals' ability to adapt to the online method, which resulted in the end of manual applications. The change demonstrates the KMC's commitment to embracing digital transformation projects that will modernize civic services and improve citizen convenience.
