The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), facing financial constraints, obtained INR 18.63 crore through an ongoing amnesty scheme. Over the past month, 25,879 property owners, experiencing difficulties in paying property taxes, participated in the scheme, which remains open until March 31. In response to requests from various quarters, the Urban Development Department (UDD) revised the rebate scheme, reducing penal interest on defaulters.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the revised scheme after a District Planning Committee (DPC) meeting in Nagpur on January 1, 2024. Following approval from Deputy Chief Minister and District Guardian Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the NMC introduced an 80% waiver on penalties for tax defaulters paying in a lump sum. Through the amnesty scheme, the NMC waived penalties totaling INR 4.63 crore for 25,879 tax defaulters.

This initiative applies to individuals who have not paid property tax, water tax, or rents for market department shops. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Milind Meshram detailed the provisions of the Abhay Yojana (Amnesty Scheme 2023–24), where citizens are eligible for an 80% reduction in penalty charges for overdue property tax, water charges, and shop rents if settled before March 31, 2024.

Citizens can make payments by visiting the NMC headquarters, respective zonal offices, or through online platforms. Meshram reported that as of February 5, 25,879 property tax arrears have been settled under this scheme. The highest number of beneficiaries (4,116) were from the Nehru Nagar zone, contributing INR 2.23 crore, while 3,790 property owners from Laxmi Nagar zone cleared dues totaling INR 2.92 crore, and 3,695 from Ashi Nagar zone paid INR 2.79 crore.

This scheme represents a significant step for the NMC in addressing tax defaults and improving its financial stability. The successful implementation of the amnesty scheme by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation underscores its commitment to addressing financial challenges and enhancing revenue collection. Through initiatives like these, the NMC not only provides relief to taxpayers but also strengthens its financial health, ensuring sustainable urban development and service delivery.
