The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to construct a Rs 700-crore, 2.5 km elevated road in Kalyan, aiming to alleviate traffic for commuters from Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur heading towards Thane and Mumbai. The project, set to float a tender soon, begins near Vithalwadi, crossing key railway lines and terminating at Kalyan-Ahmednagar National Highway. Traffic police anticipate relief on Waldhuni Bridge and Kalyan station road, while local residents are also happy with the impending solution to persistent traffic issues.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to embark on a crucial infrastructure project aimed at easing the commute for motorists traveling from Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur to Thane and Mumbai via Kalyan. The proposed plan involves the construction of a 2.5 km elevated road in Kalyan, with an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore. The MMRDA is poised to initiate the project by floating a tender in the near future. The elevated road is slated to commence near the Vithalwadi crematorium on Old Pune Link Road, traversing the Kalyan-Karjat and Kalyan-Kasara railway lines via Waldhuni. The route will run parallel to the Waldhuni river and culminate near the Kalyan-Ahmednagar National Highway, terminating near Palms Hotel. Shrikant Shinde, the Member of Parliament for Kalyan Lok Sabha, revealed that the MMRDA has prepared a detailed project report (DPR), with approximately 70% of the land acquisition process already completed. Shinde emphasized that the elevated road would substantially alleviate traffic congestion at key points, including Waldhuni, F Cabin Bridge, and Shahad Bridge. The travel time between Vithalwadi and Shahad in Kalyan is expected to shrink from 40 minutes to a mere five minutes upon the completion of the elevated road. Kalyan serves as a pivotal connectivity hub for various cities, and the current commuting scenario involves residents from Kalyan East, Kalyan rural, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur navigating through Kalyan city to reach Bhiwandi, Thane, and Mumbai. Shinde highlighted that the elevated road concept originated to establish a direct link between the old Pune Link Road from Vithalwadi to Kalyan's Ahmednagar National Highway. The MMRDA sanctioned and initiated the project survey and subsequent land acquisition process. Traffic police authorities foresee a significant reduction in congestion on Waldhuni Bridge and Kalyan station road once the elevated road becomes operational. The impending infrastructure development has garnered positive reactions from residents, with expectations of streamlined travel and reduced commute times, particularly for those residing in Ulhasnagar and neighbouring areas en route to Mumbai via Kalyan.
