Synopsis

• The Centre has notified two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Puducherry following approvals granted by the Board of Approval under the Department of Commerce.
• An IT/ITES SEZ will be developed by Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk.
• The Commerce Ministry stated that this will be the first SEZ in India to be developed by an urban local body.
• A second multi-sector SEZ will be established by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk.
• The projects are aimed at expanding industrial and technology-led economic activity in the Union Territory through dedicated SEZ infrastructure.

The Central Government has notified two Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Puducherry, including an information technology-focused project that will become the first SEZ in the country to be developed by an urban local body. The notification was issued following approvals granted earlier this year by the Board of Approval for SEZs under the Department of Commerce.

According to an official statement issued on May 29, the proposals for both projects were cleared during the 137th meeting of the Board of Approval held on February 27. The notification marks the next step in the development of dedicated economic zones intended to support industrial and technology-driven investment in the Union Territory.

One of the approved projects is an IT/ITES Special Economic Zone that will be developed by Oulgaret Municipality at Thattanchavady village in Oulgaret Taluk. The Commerce Ministry said the project would be the first SEZ in India to be developed by an urban local body, creating a distinct model for local government participation in the development of export-oriented economic infrastructure.

The IT/ITES SEZ is expected to provide a dedicated ecosystem for information technology and technology-enabled services enterprises operating from Puducherry. Such zones typically offer infrastructure and regulatory frameworks designed to support export-focused business activity and employment generation in the services sector.

The second notified project is a multi-sector SEZ to be developed by the Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC). The proposed zone will be located at Karasur village in Villianur Taluk and is intended to accommodate a range of industrial and business activities across sectors.

PIPDIC, the Union Territory's industrial development agency, has been tasked with implementing the project and facilitating industrial growth through the creation of dedicated infrastructure and investment-ready land parcels. The multi-sector format allows for the establishment of diverse manufacturing and service enterprises within the same economic zone.

The notification of the two SEZs adds to Puducherry's industrial development initiatives and follows the formal approval process administered by the Department of Commerce. With one project focused on the technology sector and the other designed as a multi-sector development, the two zones are expected to broaden the Union Territory's economic infrastructure and support future investment activity.
