Synopsis

A 26-year-old man died after a fire engulfed a garage-cum-residence in Mumbai’s Khar area, causing extensive damage to the family’s home and workplace in Chuim Village. The deceased, Adrien Alves, was pursuing chartered accountancy studies while also working at a comic book store in Bandra. The blaze destroyed portions of the residential structure and adjoining garage owned by the family. Following the incident, relatives and local residents launched an online fundraiser to support rebuilding efforts and assist the uninsured family.

A 26-year-old resident died after a late-night fire engulfed a garage-cum-residential structure in Mumbai’s Khar area, causing extensive damage to the family’s home and workplace. The incident occurred in Chuim Village, where the fire spread through the premises occupied by the Alves family.

The deceased was identified as Adrien Alves, son of a well-known local motorcycle mechanic. According to reports, Alves had been pursuing chartered accountancy studies while simultaneously working at a comic book store in Bandra. Emergency responders reached the location after the fire was reported, but the blaze had already caused severe destruction to portions of the structure.

Officials stated that the fire affected both the family’s residential section and the adjoining garage facility. The extent of structural damage resulted in significant financial losses for the family, whose property reportedly did not have insurance coverage against fire-related incidents. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of the blaze, and investigations into the incident are continuing.

Local residents described the Alves family as longstanding members of the Chuim Village community. Adrien Alves was reportedly known among residents for balancing his professional studies with work responsibilities while supporting the family business. His last rites are scheduled to be held at St Vincent de Paul Church in Khar.

Following the incident, family members and community supporters initiated an online fundraising campaign seeking approximately INR 20 lakh to assist with rebuilding the damaged home and supporting the family after the loss. Residents and well-wishers have also extended support to the family through local community networks in the Khar area.

The incident has again highlighted concerns regarding fire safety in older mixed-use residential structures across Mumbai, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where residential units and commercial garages often operate within the same premises. Fire officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of electrical safety audits, emergency exits and fire protection systems in such properties.
