• Trichy MP Shri Durai Vaiko has urged Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw to include Tiruchirappalli in the Centre’s Rail Vision 2030 programme.
• The demand includes faster approval for doubling of the Tiruchi-Karur broad gauge section and expansion of railway infrastructure in the region.
• The proposal aims to strengthen connectivity, improve freight and passenger movement and support industrial and economic growth across central Tamil Nadu.
Trichy MP Shri Durai Vaiko has urged Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw to include Tiruchirappalli in the Centre’s Rail Vision 2030 programme, seeking greater focus on railway infrastructure expansion and network modernisation in central Tamil Nadu.
In a representation submitted to the Railway Ministry, the MP highlighted the strategic importance of Tiruchirappalli as a major transport, industrial and educational centre in the state. He sought inclusion of the city in long-term railway planning initiatives aimed at improving connectivity, capacity augmentation and operational efficiency across the national rail network.
Among the key demands raised was expedited approval for doubling the Tiruchi-Karur broad gauge rail section, which has been identified as an important corridor for both passenger and freight traffic. Railway infrastructure expansion along this route is expected to improve train movement and reduce operational bottlenecks in the region.
The proposal also emphasised the role of Tiruchirappalli as a key junction connecting southern and western parts of Tamil Nadu. Railway officials and regional stakeholders have repeatedly pointed to rising passenger demand and freight movement across the corridor due to industrial activity, educational institutions and regional commerce.
Infrastructure upgrades in and around Tiruchirappalli have increasingly been viewed as critical to supporting economic growth across central Tamil Nadu. The region hosts engineering industries, fabrication units, educational hubs and manufacturing clusters that depend heavily on rail connectivity for movement of goods and workforce mobility.
The MP also sought greater investment in station modernisation, operational infrastructure and capacity enhancement projects under future railway development programmes. Rail Vision 2030 is expected to focus on network expansion, faster train movement, improved logistics integration and modernisation of railway systems across India.
Railway infrastructure experts noted that doubling projects remain essential for improving line capacity on busy corridors where increasing train operations often create congestion and scheduling limitations. Single-line sections on important freight and passenger routes can significantly affect operational efficiency and travel time reliability.
Southern Railway has witnessed increasing infrastructure activity in recent years, including electrification works, station redevelopment and capacity enhancement projects across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Several projects linked to freight connectivity and industrial movement are also being prioritised as part of broader logistics and economic corridor planning.
Industry bodies and regional business groups have frequently sought stronger railway investment in Tiruchirappalli due to its central geographic position and growing industrial significance. Improved rail infrastructure is expected to support manufacturing activity, cargo movement and regional trade connectivity across multiple districts.
The Railway Ministry is expected to examine the proposals as part of ongoing infrastructure planning and future project prioritisation exercises. Inclusion of Tiruchirappalli within broader national railway modernisation initiatives could potentially accelerate approval and execution of pending rail infrastructure projects in the region.
