The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out a special city-wide drinking water quality inspection drive in the past week following complaints received from residents regarding the quality of supplied water in certain parts of the municipal area. The exercise was conducted on May 28 under directions issued by Mayor Sujata Patil and Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde.
The inspection campaign was undertaken under the supervision of Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde and involved officials from the civic body’s water supply department, including executive engineers, deputy engineers, assistant engineers and junior engineers, along with contractors associated with the integrated water supply management system.
As part of the drive, the civic administration conducted detailed inspections at the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Centre, major water transmission pipelines and multiple distribution zones between Belapur and Digha. Water quality assessments were also carried out at several critical supply points across the city’s distribution network.
According to the civic body, 72 water samples were collected from the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Centre, while another 96 samples were drawn from major transmission pipelines. In addition, 495 samples were collected from residential and supply zones across Belapur, Nerul, Turbhe, Vashi, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli, Airoli and Digha. In total, 663 water samples were tested during the inspection exercise.
The collected samples underwent testing for multiple quality parameters including pH levels, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), residual chlorine content and turbidity. The examinations were conducted in accordance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS IS 10500) specifications as well as guidelines prescribed by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO).
Following the inspection and laboratory assessment process, NMMC stated that the quality of drinking water supplied across the inspected locations was found to be compliant with prescribed BIS and CPHEEO drinking water standards. The civic body said no major deviations or contamination-related irregularities were detected during the testing exercise.
Municipal officials stated that regular monitoring and testing of drinking water quality is being carried out to ensure safe and clean potable water supply across Navi Mumbai. The corporation added that continuous surveillance of water infrastructure and distribution systems remains part of its routine public health and civic management operations.
The civic administration also appealed to residents to note that potable water currently being supplied within the NMMC jurisdiction is safe for consumption. Citizens were advised to report any complaints relating to water quality or supply issues to their respective ward offices or through the municipal corporation’s toll-free helpline number 1800222309.
