• Toyota Kirloskar Motor plans to establish a third manufacturing plant in India at Maharashtra’s Bidkin Industrial Area.
• The facility will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles and is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2029.
• The proposed unit will manufacture a new SUV model and employ around 2,800 people.
• The expansion comes as Toyota increases production capacity amid rising SUV demand in India and nearby export markets.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced plans to establish a new vehicle manufacturing facility in Maharashtra as the Japanese automaker expands production capacity in India amid sustained growth in demand for utility vehicles and regional exports.
The company stated earlier this week that the proposed manufacturing plant will be located in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra and is scheduled to commence production in the first half of 2029. The facility is expected to have an installed production capacity of 100,000 vehicles annually and employ around 2,800 people during the initial phase of operations.
According to TKM, the new facility will manufacture a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) model and will include stamping, welding, painting and vehicle assembly operations. The plant is intended to support Toyota’s long-term business expansion strategy in India while also catering to demand from surrounding export markets.
The proposed Maharashtra unit will become Toyota’s third manufacturing plant in India. The company currently operates two manufacturing facilities at Bidadi, near Bengaluru, Karnataka, with a combined installed production capacity of up to 342,000 units annually.
Toyota’s first India plant at Bidadi was established in October 1997, with commercial production beginning in December 1999. The facility currently manufactures models including the Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Legender, with an installed production capacity of up to 132,000 units annually.
The second plant, located within the existing Bidadi manufacturing complex, commenced production in December 2010. The facility manufactures the Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Hilux, with an installed capacity of up to 210,000 units per year.
The company stated that the new Maharashtra facility is aimed at strengthening its production structure in India to enable greater operational flexibility in response to future demand growth and market changes across India and neighbouring regions.
Toyota noted that the proposed plant would support timely delivery of vehicles to customers while contributing to the development of India’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem and local communities associated with the project area.
TKM is currently owned by Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, which holds an 89% stake, while Kirloskar Systems Limited owns the remaining 11%. The company employs 6,466 permanent workers across its India operations and operates on a land parcel spanning around 432 acres with a building area of approximately 74,000 square metres.
The expansion comes as automobile manufacturers continue increasing investments in India’s SUV and utility vehicle segment, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing categories in the domestic passenger vehicle market.
