Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has issued multiple public advisories cautioning consumers against fraudulent piped gas registration schemes, fake payment links and unauthorised dealership websites following a rise in scam attempts targeting residents and housing societies in Mumbai and surrounding areas.
The warnings come after residents in parts of Mumbai reportedly received suspicious calls, messages and links seeking payments for new piped natural gas connections, customer verification procedures and registration formalities. In one such instance reported earlier this month, residents of a housing society in Santacruz contacted MGL directly after receiving questionable communication related to piped gas registration, helping prevent potential financial fraud.
According to MGL, fraudsters have been impersonating company representatives and circulating fake digital links requesting consumers to submit personal information, bank details and online payments under the pretext of gas connection approvals or account verification procedures.
The company has clarified that all official customer services, applications and payment-related processes are conducted only through authorised MGL channels and its official website. MGL stated that it does not request sensitive banking information, OTPs or account credentials through phone calls, SMS messages or unofficial digital platforms.
In a separate caution notice issued by the company, MGL also warned the public against fake websites claiming to offer CNG pump dealership opportunities using the company’s name and branding. The company stated that several fraudulent websites were circulating fabricated information related to dealership allotments and investment proposals.
MGL said it had no association with such websites and advised citizens not to engage in financial transactions or share documents through unauthorised portals. The company added that individuals dealing with such entities would do so at their own risk.
As part of its public guidance measures, MGL has urged consumers to verify all communication through official customer care channels before making payments or sharing personal information. The company has also advised residents to check website authenticity carefully and use only official MGL platforms for registration, billing and dealership-related enquiries.
The advisory further stated that suspicious messages, websites or fraudulent activity should be reported directly to MGL through its official email channels and verified social media platforms.
Cyber frauds involving utility services, KYC verification and digital payment links have seen a rise across Indian cities in recent years, with fraudsters increasingly targeting residents through impersonation tactics and fake service-related communication. Utility providers and financial institutions have repeatedly advised consumers to avoid clicking on unverified links and to independently confirm requests for payments or account updates.
