Bengaluru Integrated Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise Limited has awarded a INR 1,514 crore contract to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, for the supply of 153 air-conditioned broad-gauge metro-style coaches for Bengaluru’s suburban rail project. The coaches will serve Corridors 2 and 4 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project and are expected to be delivered within 18 months. Officials stated that the order aligns with the targeted operationalisation of the Chikkabanavara–Yeshwanthpur section under Corridor 2. The contract includes design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning and regulatory approvals for the rolling stock. The development marks a significant execution milestone for the long-delayed suburban rail network aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving regional connectivity across Bengaluru’s expanding urban corridor.
Bengaluru Integrated Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise Limited, the nodal agency overseeing Bengaluru’s suburban rail network, has issued a work order worth INR 1,514 crore to Integral Coach Factory for the supply of 153 air-conditioned broad-gauge metro-type coaches for Corridors 2 and 4 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). The contract was formalised in the past week as the project moves into a key execution phase after multiple delays over recent years.
According to project authorities, the coach deliveries are scheduled to commence within 18 months, aligning with the targeted inauguration timeline for the Chikkabanavara–Yeshwanthpur section under Corridor 2. Corridor 2 spans approximately 25 km between Benniganahalli and Chikkabanavara, while Corridor 4 stretches nearly 47 km between Heelalige and Rajanukunte.
Officials stated that the procurement timeline has been aligned with directions issued during a PRAGATI review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late 2025. A formal memorandum of understanding between Bi-RIDE and ICF is also expected to be executed shortly to finalise technical and commercial terms associated with the contract.
The scope of work extends beyond coach manufacturing and includes detailed design, quality inspection, integration, testing and commissioning of the rolling stock. ICF will also be responsible for securing statutory approvals from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the research and standards arm of the Ministry of Railways.
Project officials stated that the coaches are being designed as metro-style suburban trainsets with fully air-conditioned interiors intended to support high-frequency urban rail operations. The rolling stock will also be integrated with signalling, traction, power supply and platform screen door systems being developed under separate packages for the suburban rail project.
Authorities further indicated that the trains will be required to comply with RAMS standards relating to reliability, availability, maintainability and safety. The suburban rail system is expected to provide a metro-like commuter experience while improving connectivity between Bengaluru’s residential suburbs, employment hubs and transit corridors.
Laxman Singh stated that the work order represented an important milestone for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project and would help synchronise rolling stock readiness with infrastructure construction timelines.
The Bengaluru suburban rail network was originally sanctioned in 2020 with a six-year implementation target but has witnessed repeated delays linked to land acquisition, tendering and execution bottlenecks. The project has been positioned as a major urban mobility initiative aimed at reducing Bengaluru’s road congestion and improving public transport integration across the metropolitan region.
