• The contract is valued at EUR 677.07 million, excluding taxes, equivalent to around INR 7,544 crore.
• Company executives said the order is Afcons’ largest international contract to date and reflects its growing overseas infrastructure portfolio.
• The development adds to Afcons’ track record of executing complex transport and tunnelling projects, including the Chenab bridge, Kolkata Metro under-river tunnel and Atal Tunnel.
Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has emerged as the most suitable bidder for a railway rehabilitation and construction project in Croatia, expanding the company’s international infrastructure presence into Europe. The announcement was made by the company earlier this week, with executives describing the project as Afcons’ largest overseas order so far.
The project involves the reconstruction of an existing railway track along with the construction of an additional railway line in Croatia. Apart from civil engineering works, the scope also includes overhead electrification systems, signalling infrastructure and telecommunication installations.
According to the company, the contract has been valued at EUR 677.07 million excluding taxes, which translates to approximately INR 7,544 crore. The project is expected to strengthen Afcons’ international order book and broaden its operational footprint beyond its established markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Krishnamurthy Subramanian, executive chairman of Afcons Infrastructure, stated that the project represented a significant stage in the company’s international expansion and marked its entry into the European market. He indicated that the selection reflected Afcons’ capability to undertake complex and large-scale infrastructure developments across multiple geographies.
Subramanian further noted that the company viewed the project as an opportunity to contribute to the modernisation of Croatia’s railway infrastructure while reinforcing its position as an international infrastructure delivery partner.
S Paramasivan, managing director of the company, said the railway project would include reconstruction of the existing line and development of a parallel second track. He added that the scope extended beyond core civil construction to include electrification, signalling and telecommunications systems required for railway operations.
Afcons, part of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, has executed several large transport and tunnelling projects in India over the past decade. These include the Chenab railway bridge on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link corridor, the under-river tunnel section of the Kolkata East-West Metro project, and the Atal Tunnel beneath Rohtang Pass.
The company stated that it remains focused on executing infrastructure projects that improve connectivity and support economic activity across regions. The Croatia order is also expected to enhance the company’s credentials in the European rail infrastructure segment, where public transport modernisation and cross-border rail connectivity projects continue to attract investment.
