• Ministry of Railways has granted in-principle approval for a new suburban railway station between Mulund and Thane in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
• Devendra Fadnavis announced the approval earlier this week while sharing communication received from Ashwini Vaishnaw.
• The proposed station has been a long-pending demand from local representatives and residents seeking improved suburban rail accessibility across the rapidly growing eastern Mumbai-Thane corridor.
• The station is proposed on land belonging to a government mental hospital and is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and commuter movement across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Ministry of Railways has granted in-principle approval for a proposed suburban railway station between Mulund and Thane, providing a major connectivity boost for commuters travelling across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The approval was announced earlier this week by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who shared details of a communication received from Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
According to the letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the railway ministry has accorded preliminary approval for the proposed suburban railway station, which has been under consideration following long-standing demands from local representatives and residents in the corridor.
The proposed station is expected to be developed on land associated with a government mental hospital located between Mulund and Thane. Local political leaders and commuter groups have for several years sought additional suburban rail infrastructure in the area to reduce passenger pressure on existing stations and improve last-mile accessibility for surrounding residential neighbourhoods.
The Mumbai suburban railway network remains one of the busiest urban transit systems globally and serves as a critical transport backbone for residential and commercial growth across the MMR region. Infrastructure additions in the Mulund-Thane corridor have gained increasing importance amid rapid urbanisation, rising commuter volumes and expanding residential development across eastern suburbs and Thane district.
Devendra Fadnavis stated that the proposed station would strengthen connectivity across MMR and contribute to improved suburban transport infrastructure for daily commuters. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for granting the approval.
Industry observers have noted that improved rail connectivity often plays a significant role in supporting residential and commercial real estate growth across suburban corridors. Additional suburban stations typically improve accessibility, reduce travel time and strengthen development potential in adjoining micro-markets.
The proposed station is expected to form part of broader railway and urban transport expansion efforts underway across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where multiple metro, suburban rail and road infrastructure projects are currently being implemented to address growing mobility requirements.
