Indian Railways has temporarily paused fresh procurement orders for AI-enabled surveillance cameras while revised operational guidelines are being finalised, according to a report by The Economic Times. The review comes amid a wider digital infrastructure expansion programme undertaken during 2025-26. Indian Railways has deployed AI-based video surveillance systems at 1,874 stations, commissioned IP MPLS telecom infrastructure at 1,396 stations and integrated automatic real-time passenger announcement systems at 1,405 stations. The railway network is also installing tunnel communication systems across difficult terrain projects, including the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link corridor.
Indian Railways has put new procurement orders for artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance cameras on hold pending the finalisation of revised operational guidelines, according to a report by The Economic Times. The move comes as the national transporter continues expanding digital infrastructure and AI-led operational systems across railway stations and transport corridors.
The review relates to AI-based camera systems intended for passenger safety, monitoring and operational surveillance. The report stated that railway authorities are reassessing deployment specifications and operational protocols before proceeding with fresh procurement of the systems.
The temporary procurement pause coincides with a broader technology modernisation programme implemented by Indian Railways during 2025-26. According to a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau, the railway network has already deployed Video Surveillance Systems equipped with AI-based video analytics across 1,874 stations nationwide.
The surveillance infrastructure includes automated analytics capable of detecting events such as intrusion and loitering. The systems are also integrated with facial recognition software for real-time monitoring and identification. Railway authorities stated that the technology is intended to strengthen station-level surveillance and improve passenger safety mechanisms across the network.
Indian Railways has simultaneously expanded its Unified Telecom Backbone Infrastructure using Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology. The upgraded telecom infrastructure has been commissioned at 1,396 railway stations and is designed to support high-bandwidth operational applications and centralised digital systems.
According to the PIB statement, the IP MPLS network supports applications including the Passenger Reservation System, Unreserved Ticketing System, Freight Operations Information System, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems and video conferencing infrastructure. The network also enables centralised access to surveillance feeds and operational communication systems.
Passenger communication infrastructure has also undergone expansion through the Integrated Passenger Information System, which has been linked with the National Train Enquiry System to provide automatic real-time train announcements. Indian Railways stated that the integrated system has been implemented at 1,405 stations and includes electronic train indicator boards, coach guidance systems and public address systems.
The railways is additionally deploying tunnel communication systems across projects located in difficult terrain, including the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link corridor. The communication systems are intended to maintain uninterrupted radio connectivity between personnel inside tunnels, headquarters and operational control centres.
Indian Railways stated that the digital infrastructure initiatives undertaken during 2025-26 are aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening safety systems and modernising passenger information services through technology-led interventions.
