Repeated cave-in on Gurugram-Sohna elevated road raises questions over infrastructure quality

Synopsis

A section of the Gurugram-Sohna elevated road near Subhash Chowk caved in again during the past week, leading to traffic disruption and renewed concerns over the condition of the corridor. The incident exposed a large crater and sewage flow beneath the damaged road surface, with residents alleging that recurring sewer line failures are weakening the structure from below. The stretch has witnessed similar collapses in recent years, prompting questions over construction quality, drainage planning and long-term maintenance. The elevated corridor, developed at an estimated cost of around INR 1,466 crore, is one of Gurugram’s key road infrastructure projects.

A portion of the Gurugram-Sohna elevated flyover road near Subhash Chowk collapsed again during the past week, forcing authorities to barricade the damaged stretch and divert traffic movement from the affected area. The cave-in created a deep crater on the carriageway and exposed sewage water flowing underneath the road surface, according to local residents and officials present at the site.

The incident took place on one of Gurugram’s busiest road corridors that connects the city with Sohna and further links to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway region. Due to heavy daily traffic movement on the route, commuters faced congestion in nearby stretches after barricades were placed around the damaged section.

Residents living near the area said similar incidents have occurred multiple times on the same corridor over the last few years. They alleged that underground sewer lines beneath the road regularly collapse or leak, gradually weakening the soil and eventually causing the road surface above to sink. Locals also questioned the durability of the construction and whether sufficient structural inspections are being carried out after every repair.

Reports indicated that a similar road cave-in had appeared near SD Adarsh Vidyalaya in 2023, while another pit was reported later in almost the same location. The repeated damage has increased concerns among commuters and nearby residents, especially because the corridor handles a large volume of vehicles every day, including commercial traffic moving towards Sohna and adjoining highway networks.

The Gurugram-Sohna elevated corridor was developed by the National Highways Authority of India as a major infrastructure project aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity between Gurugram and Sohna. The project, built at an estimated cost of around INR 1,466 crore, became fully operational in 2022 and significantly reduced travel time on the route.

However, the project has also witnessed technical and structural concerns in the past. During the construction phase in 2020, a section of the under-construction flyover had collapsed, temporarily affecting project work and raising early concerns regarding execution and safety standards. Since becoming operational, several stretches around the corridor have also faced complaints related to waterlogging, damaged service roads and drainage issues during monsoon periods.

The latest cave-in has once again highlighted the larger issue of underground infrastructure management in Gurugram, where rapid urban expansion and increasing traffic pressure are putting additional strain on roads, drainage systems and civic utilities. Several infrastructure projects across the city are currently being upgraded, including road widening works, underpasses and elevated corridors aimed at easing congestion in key traffic zones such as Hero Honda Chowk, Southern Peripheral Road and Bakhtawar Chowk.

Authorities have not yet released a detailed technical explanation regarding the exact cause of the latest collapse or confirmed whether a structural audit of the corridor will be conducted. Repair teams reached the site soon after the incident and temporary restoration work was initiated to prevent further damage and ensure commuter safety.
